The Birthday Bash - Erie Cafe Chicago
Mar 22, 2023•31 min•Season 1Ep. 48
Episode description
This is the one about the birthday party that started at noon with me being the only one at the party until I went the official birthday celebration dinner at the Erie Cafe, drunk as a skunk, putting shit up my trunk, losing my junk $100 dinner and ended up in the trunk or felt like it at least. I was in denial of the self-sabotage the alcohol was taking on my life and relationships. Self-sabotage is a behavior where we do things that prevent us from achieving our goals. This can happen consciously or unconsciously and can affect our personal and professional success, as well as our mental health. In order to stop self-sabotage, we must first become aware of what causes it.
Identifying self-sabotaging behavior is critical to noticing unhelpful patterns of behavior and strengthening the ability to stop them in their tracks. Take some time and journal. Here is helpful way to begin identifying forms of self-sabotage is to frame your situation using the following sentence: "I want to achieve (goal), but I keep doing (behavior)."
Some common types of self-sabotage include perfectionism, struggling with moderation, running on empty, procrastination, and a lack of communication. The signs of self-sabotage can be subtle, such as negative self-talk and extreme self-criticism.
To stop self-sabotaging, there are five key steps to take:
Develop self-awareness
Write it out - Journal
Create a plan - and do it
Practice mindfulness -
Communicate
Remember that trying to change too much at once is classic self-defeating behavior. Working with a coach or mental health professional can provide support and accountability as you learn how to stop self-sabotaging and move forward.
