พระอานนท์ ผู้เป็นเอตทัคคะในทางพหูสูต ได้กราบทูลขอพรจากพระพุทธเจ้าก่อนที่จะรับทำหน้าที่เป็นพุทธอุปัฏฐาก 8 ประการพหูสูตมีองค์ 5 (คุณสมบัติที่ทำให้ควรได้รับชื่อว่าเป็น “พหูสูต”)ด้วยเหตุเพียงเท่าไร ภิกษุจึงจะเป็นผู้ใคร่ครวญได้เร็วในกุศลธรรมทั้งหลาย เรียนได้ดี เรียนได้มาก และสิ่งที่เธอเรียนแล้วย่อมไม่เลือนไป
