Across Australia.
This is Weekends with Luke Grant.
But you gotta keep your head up then you can let your hand up.
You gotta keep.
Your head up and you can let.
Your hand up.
I know it's hard, No, it's hard to remember sometimes, but.
You gotta keep your head up then you can let your hand Downy.
Good morning, Welcome to Weekends with Luke Grant. Great to be with you on two GB in Sydney, four BC in Brisbane and via the two GB app and the four BC app for listeners all around Australia. On Sunday morning, June twenty two. I hope you're having a great weekend
so far. Another cracking start to the day in Sydney and still some wet weather around in Brisbane today officially Sydney and mostly sunny day after the early morning fog or Froster Top and city of nineteen Penrith nineteen Paramounta nineteen Bondye and along the coast about eight en degrees
and in Brisbane medium chance of showers, light winds. I become east of southeasterly around the middle of the day twenty two in Brisbane twenty two at the Airport twenty four, Ipswich, twenty three at the Gold Coast twenty three at the Sunshine Coast Look. Yesterday was the winter solstice, and I was alerted by my colleague Brian Wilson of three aw late in the show of an event. To be honest, I've never heard of how about this? Are you one
of these kinds of humans? Wearing nothing but red swim caps? Three thousand souls took the annual nude sunrise plunge into
Hobart's River Dermot to mark the winter solstice. You know, there are other ways to do it, like you say, hey, it's the winter'sassus they or you can dude up and jump in the water now, as it turns out, Because I know you've come to expect you've come to expect a certain level of excellence around this show, right, I know that, And it weighs heavily upon all of us that when we sit down, when we start working here on the weekends, just after two o'clock on Saturday or
Sunday morning, right just after six, we put our heads together and we come up with what would the listener expect? In fact, that's our guiding light. What would the listener expect. So when I tell you that three thousand souls took to the annual nude sunrise plunge into Hobart's River Dermot to mark the winter Solstice yesterday at seven forty am, when the water was thirteen degrees, the listener would expect
that we'd be all over it. Well, as it turns out, we had listener who was a part of this, and they've been in touch saying good he Luke Barry here, I was part of the nude Solstice swim, and for your and your listeners benefit, I miked myself up. Now I've not heard this yet. Barry says he wanted us to understand what it was like when he nudeed up and jumped in the River Dermot yesterday. So, with apologies in cases off language or something inappropriate, this is what
we got from Barry. Ah right, fair enough. Sorry, That's all I could come up with for that jumping in the bloody water at seven forty it thirteen degrees to mark the winter solstice. What the hell were they thinking? Just say winter Solstus today? How good? Aap Reports of Liz Cannard, who has been traveling around Tasmania for almost four months with her husband. She says she was petrified before taking the dip. You didn't have to take the dip, she says. I'm not a strong swimmer and I don't
take my gear off for anybody. Well reassuring there, she says, I've ticked off a couple of things today. Another Lizzie Nash from Sydney, was also in the mood for a bit of a carpe dim. She said it's about seizing the moment, seizing life and being inspired. You can do that with clothes on and in warm water, just saying She says, this is the sort of thing that motivates you don't want to do more and challenge yourself. It
was all inspiring. I absolutely loved it. Now the free swim is part of the Dark Mofo Festival, started with a few hundred participants back in twenty thirteen in Tazzy. It's returned to its full glory, I'm told this year, and it's had its financial worries. Well, if I might just say, without stating the bleeding obvious, if your financial model revolves around the success of jumping in icy waters nude on the shortest day of the year working Hello,
just saying. University of Queensland psychologists surveyed swimmers in previous years before and after they took the plants. They found a significant boost in feelings of connection. Tell you what I'd be connected to the heater people told us, says Laura Feris, about whether they felt pain and pleasure during the swim. It's an example of people seeking out aversive experiences, such as eating extremely spicy food or watching horror movies.
This is what psychologists call benign masochism, and that could be the optimal term for expeditioners at Australia's form Antarctic and sub Antarctic research stations, who also celebrated the solstice with a much colder traditional plunge. At the three Antarctic stations, a hole is cut in the sea ice each year expeditioners have a quick dip in the sub zero waters. The shock is closely followed by a rush, which is quickly followed by a scramble to the ladder to get
the hell out of there, says Morson Station leader Dave Roberts. Ironically, the water is warmer than the windshills, so it's all a bit confusing, but totally worth it. What about that anyway? Thank goodness, were all different, right, Thank goodness, were all different. Now, before we get down to our business here, I want to say a very special good morning and a happy fifty second wedding anniversary today to and Judy and Peter Ford.
Now I know Duty and Peter. In fact, they came away with us on a cruise maybe two years ago when we went to Italy in Croatia. By the way, this is the time where I say, have a commercial agreement with travel right anyway, Laura dobbed you in, Peter and Judy. Laura, I hope you're well. My parents love listening to you. We can show and appreciate your support. Well, they're very good people, as are you, Laura. Good person,
not good people, good person. And it's an honor and a pleasure to say happy fifty second wedding anniversary today to Judy and Peter Ford down there near the act. Have a wonderful day and thank you for listening. Lots to talk about this story today in the news court papers is extraordinary. A donor conceived Brisbane woman who has seventy seven confirmed siblings has called for the urgent creation of a national framework to regulate the fertility industry that
allowed her biological father to donate more than three hundred times. Now, speaking exclusively to The Sunday Mail in Brisbane, Lindall Bubkey opened up about discovery and she had dozens of brothers and sisters across queens and New South Wales, Victoria and in fact internationally, after she ordered DNA testing through a genealogy company in twenty twenty two. The Lady is thirty three.
She said her parents revealed that she and her brother were donor conceived at Queensland Fertility Group after she told them she was looking into her ancestry. Just weeks later, he finalized genealogy results revealed Ms Bubkey also had eleven half siblings. That number is now seventy seven, with five of those confirmed within the past two months, including one
who died in infancy. Unregulated practices met her biological father donated sperm three hundred and twenty five times and was paid for doing so, despite claims that donors were not compensated at the time. It's a staggering number, but it's very likely a significant underrepresentation of the true number of siblings. I have, she said, which is well and truly likely into the hundreds, and she said it could theoretically be thousands.
Records of Miss Bubkee's donor, conception and details about the donor were destroyed, with the Queensland Fertility Group explaining to her parents are lost in a flood. Mss Bubke said she had to inform the clinic that she was the biological daughter of the prolific donor and that she was connected to a growing list of half siblings. She says, when I open my phone and see I have a new sibling, that is my mental state for the rest
of the day. It's the wondering, It's the anxiety. It's the stress of making sure their needs are met and that they can get the information they need, the stress of do they know? It was just's waking horror. As the weeks went on, and as I found more and more information about the practices of Queensland Fertility Group in particular, but also the clinics more broadly across the entire country,
she said. Learning she was donut conceived has reframed her relationships and social interactions and this is a thing that got me. She constantly wonders whether the next person she meets could be related to her, and she says, I go around, I look at people on the street, and I think, I wonder if you could be my sibling.
You look like my sister, you look like my brother, she said, and then she makes this point, I can confirm my husband and I are not related, But in those first few weeks there were the horrible thoughts of what if my husband is donut conceived and we didn't know what if one of my ex boyfriends is a sibling. I'll only be happy once I know all of my siblings, and I'll die unhappy then because I'll never get that. There's just no way for me to ever find them
more because the records were destroyed. She says her story may sound unique, but true for at leg seventy seven other people. Now she wishes she knew earlier, and she doesn't blame her parents who never who were never told who the donor was either. She said her parents felt betrayed by the clinic, having originally been told each donation would only be used for a small number of families.
A Queensland Fertility Group spokesperson said they were aware of Miss Bubkee's circumstances and strongly supported establishing a national donor Conception registry. They said today's donor conception legislation prohibits anonymous donation, and newly introduced Queensland legislation now includes a ten family limit for sperm donors. Isn't that extraordinary? Seventy seven siblings? And look, you can understand I can't pretend to be in her position and fully understand the mental anguish, but
I'm smart enough to know that you would. Wouldn't you think? I just wonder if the list was originally ten and now it's seventy seven? Remarkable? Several US Air Force B two bombers appeared to have taken off from a base in the US and were headed across the Pacific. We're told as President Trump was scheduled to meet at the White House with his national security team this morning our time to discuss joining Israel's attacks on Iranian nuclear sites.
Air traffic control communication showed the B two aircraft, which can carry thirty thousand pound bunker buster bombs. Mister Trump is considering dropping on Iran's four doh underground nuclear facility. There's bend no, they call it four doh he'll be filthy. Taking off from Whiteman Air Force Base in Missouri. The destination of the plane's not clear, although one air traffic control message suggested they were en route to a US air base. On guam, ving planes does not mean the
president has made up his mind. It's not unusual to shift military assets into position to provide options to the president, even if they're not ultimately deployed, and it's also possible the US allowed the public to know about the movement of the bombers to pressure Iran to come to the negotiating table. Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sara said yesterday Israel's bombing campaign had pushed a run two or three years
back from the capability to make a nuclear weapon. Still, Israel has yet to fully destroy some of the most significant nuclear enrichment sites, chief among them the one they're calling four Doh. Iran's President Masud Pezeshkian said Iran would not reduce nuclear activities to zero under any circumstances, rejecting a US demand that. According to the local news agency, he said he was ready to talk and cooperate, but warned it would continue. Israel would continue. It's sorry Iran
would continue its retaliation against Israel. The Regent's been waiting to see whether Trump will deploy American bombers to attack Fodo, and overnight, as you'd imagine, the hostilities have been maintained.
I'll get this story in a moment or two on a Sunday sweep, but I know in the nine Papers today, Treasurer Jim Charmers has admitted left leaning governments are strangling their own good intentions with bureaucracy, arguing it's time to deliver supply side solutions to problems ranging from housing to renewable energy. Now it's his first extended sit down newspaper
interview since the federal poll. Charmers has demanded regulators overseeing everything from the banking sector to consumer law identify regulations that can be axed or simplified to reduce costs and increase the pace at which the economy can grow. He revealed the recently released book Abundance, which argues progressives need to rethink their overly rules based approach to making the change they want, had been a wake up call for
the left of politics. Now, this book by the American journalists Ezra Kleine and Derek Thompson was quote doing the rounds unquote of the Ministry and senior MPs keen to take on board the author's insights, which include trying to strip red tape from scientific research and housing construction. Chalmers said the upcoming Productivity roundtable would tap into the ideas
outlined in Abundance. Well, look, this has been a call, if you will, from center right governments, going back to Thatcher in the UK and probably before that, for governments to get the hell out of our way. Let business create stuff, Let people get out there and pursue their endeavors, and make it easier for people to achieve things, not more difficult. Because it was then the domain of center right. Must have been naughty, but now it's in a book,
it's okay. Is that how it works? Amazing? We'll get into that in a moment or two. And some other
stuff on the Sunday Sweep. My guest today, the Great Adam Crichton, chief economist at the Institute of Public Affairs and formerly based in Washington, for the Australian newspaper, plenty to pick his brain over, including an outstanding opinion piece he published through the week on net zero he says in Australia's economic outlook has shifted from optimistic growth to declining national income per person and falling global living standards.
He attributes this to client to self imposed economic burdens, chief of which is net zero. We'll get him to talk us through that in a moment or two after ten This morning. A great story that I know many of you would recognize as an extraordinary sacrifice, an extraordinary gift of love, an extraordinary gift of family. Nick Smith, at the age of thirty, was working as a high flying engineer, playing his trade on massive developments like Crown Casino in Sydney, and then, out of the blue, his
mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. He was then left with the choice he could either keep climbing the corporate ladder and his burgeoning career, or he could move home to Nara, on the south coast of New South Wales to care
for his mum. Well, he chose his mum. He'd hoped that being with her would make things easier, but instead he spent most of his time navigating a complex healthcare system made up of agencies that don't seem to speak to each other, that experience has inspired him to do some even more incredible things, which I'll get Nick to tell you about after ten. An amazing yarn today around the round ball game. Now they say heading a ball,
a soccer ball, can change your brain. Now, this is according to a world first experiment which found that heading a ball induces subtle but measurable changes to the brain even when there's been no concussion. Using MRI scans, researchers noticed alterations to the chemistry in the region of the
brain responsible for motor control. They also discovered decreased electrical conductivity across several areas, leading them to conclude that heading impacts the brain's energy use and how information is transmitted through white matter. The results signal and need for further research into heading's long term effects, particular as the higher risk of dementia among former professional footballers becomes more apparent.
Talking through the findings, the head researcher, the man who led the study from the University of Queensland, got Nathan de Lange. Stephen Fennick will join me to talk technology in our second hour. He'll walk us through this story. Now, President Donald Trump's company in the US has launched a new mobile service and plans to release a smartphone later in the year, designed and built in America Trump Mobile. They'll offer a monthly plan priced at forty seven dollars
forty five. I hope the phone comes with a magacap Jim Haynes in our last hour here reminiscing about the old drive ins of Sydney. In Brisbane, we have Quiz all the breaking news and again plenty of time to talk to you. So that is what I have for you today. It's eight degrees in Sydney right now, but it feels like four. It's sixteen in Brisbane and it feels like sixteen. This is Weekends with Luke Grant on two GB and four BC. Now, just before I get
Dennis to update the roads. Good morning Dennis. There's a few things to tell you about. Yesterday. We had a call from a listener whose mom is trying to get out of Iran. You remember the call, and she's in her seventies. She doesn't have access to transport. I mean, you can understand what's going on there. She had to make a way to the border and our listener told us that her mom had got there and whilst it was indicated to her that there would be help and
support of the border. A was losing her ability to communicate. I guess telephones and other things we take for granted aren't always going to work everywhere. But importantly she was told that there would be that assistance there. So we approached the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, who provided this statement. And I'm hoping to talk to my listener later in the show. DFAT is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who wishes to leave Iran.
Owing to our privacy obligations, we're unable to provide further comment se DFAT is deploying consular staff to Asherbaijan, including at its border crossing, to support Australians departing Iran. We asked Australians in Iran who wish to depart to do it if it is safe. I mean, this is just motherhood and apple pie stuff, and they don't have to.
We haven't identified even the listener. I didn't even use her Christian name for that exact reason, and we didn't expect them to say, oh, by the way, missus Huan or miss whoever aged whatever in her seventies from this address. We're trying to We don't want the personal info. We just want some reassurance that you could give half a
damn about people who want to flee Irana. My understanding is this woman is over there volunteering in health care facilities and has been teaching nursing and the like in Sydney and elsewhere for years, So it's not like she's over there living it up, if that's even something you can do in Iran. Anyway. They go on to say we're working with Australians registered in Iran to facilitate bord acrossing codes and acknowledge that unstable internet can connectivity in
Iran is making more difficult. Blame blame the net. Unfortunately this stage, our ability to provide consular services is extremely limited due to the situation on the ground. Passport holders need a border crossing code and a visa to cross. That's the issue. Well, I appreciate the fact you're coming back, but as I say, seems like I hope you've been more forthcoming to our listener. I'll find out later on.
And a critical and incident investigations underway after a woman died in a two vehicle crash in the Newcastle area just after two thirty this morning. Officers patrolling on Newcastle Road at North Lambton they cited a Holden Sadan driving dangerously. They did not initiate a pursuit, but a short time later the Holden Sadan collided with a Hyundai Sa'dan. The passenger of the Hyundai, a woman believed to be in her fifties, died at the scene yet to be formally identified.
The driver of twenty eight year old woman, treated by paramedics, then went to hospital. The driver of the Holden left the scene prior to police arriving. The two rear passengers in the Holden, two girls, aged fifteen and seventeen, were treated before being taken to John Hunter Hospital under police guard. A crime scene and Critical Incident team obviously continue their investigations. We'll let you know if they have more to say
throughout the rest of the show. In the meantime, do give me a call one three one eight seven three. You can text me zero four six zero eight seven three eight seven three email me at two GB dot com, four BC dot com dot AU twenty eight to ten. Dennis has a traffic today. Now some important breaking news here from Matt, my listener on the text, Luke, this is the biggest story of the weekend. I'm sure the Bunning sausages are getting skinnier and skinnier. The one I
just had was skinnier than my big thumb. Well, I don't even compare to our thumbs. Maybe, Matt, that's something we could do one day. But I'll show this my thumb to Liam by audio man and he's showing me his thumb. That's not a sausage. That's barely that's barely a hot dog. Look at that. That's ridiculous. Ah, Matt, No, well, thank you for raising that. I don't want to say the two words that are at the forefront of my mind,
but I'm going to Royal Commission. Thanks Matt very much, indeed for getting in touch and this email from Steve Morning, Luke just will see the new power rates noticed from First Energy. All rates have increased substantially. Peak has written by over fifteen cents to kill a what hour off peak by five We only six months ago changed to this supplier after doing the regular shop around, like all the so called experts on media and government tell you,
is the best way to get better pricing. The worst, however, is a solar feed in tariff. It's been reduced from five cents a killer what hour. It was originally fifteen and two cents on the balance, it's now one cent a killer what hour, and after that zero point one of a cent, effectively giving households who spend tens of thousands of dollars on solar panels nothing time to change supplies again for the umpteenth time. Your thoughts, my thoughts, Steve,
we were sold are pop and they mate. They are just sitting there, absolutely hit and missing themselves at us. There's no other way of putting it. It's just it's a joke. I make all these big statements and then as time goes on and I'm talking here about people who invested Daddy's millions in renewables, all that kind of gear. It is a joke. Thank you for getting a touch now on weekends the Sunday Sweet looking.
At the stories of the week.
Look no shortage of visious to rip into on planet Earth. Right now? Who better to do it with than the Great Adam Crichton, formerly of Washington, d C. In the Australian newspaper and now chief economist at the Institute of Public Affairs, and he's on the line. Good I Adam, good morning, Lovely to talk to you, mate, Lovely to talk to you. You wrote brilliantly about net zero through the week. I just had a listener told me about his new power prices and you know, we've all had
to live through this. The government think they're heroes because they give us some of our money back to help pay for the very big bills that they've created. But the question of net zero has become key here because a proportion of the coalition, namely the Nationals, is saying we're going to get the hell out of this. And
it's not just Nationals. As you pointed out through the week, former Labor British Prime Minister Tony Blair has called the net zero policy doomed to fail due to its irrationality. It's a really big issue. Why do we need to give net zero the flick?
Yeah?
Well, look, certainly I think we may have turned the corner very slowly on all the net zero nonsense.
As you pointed out, a former British.
Prime minister A Toney Blair has come out against the New South Wales Nationals, South Australian Liberals, UK Conservative Party have all dumped it. Now, well, I think more and more people are realizing it's just a massive tax on the economy and it totally restructures the economy in a
terrible way. You lose your manufacturing sector. Of course, as you pointed out earlier, power prices go through the roof, so you have huge job losses, huge increases not just in the direct power costs, but all the costs of food, the food and the supermarkets because obviously fuel goes up, transport costs are higher, and look, you know it's you know, we keep hearing that we're on the way to the transition, but really we're not. There isn't really much of a transition.
We're still totally dependent on fossil fuels for our energy, but the rollout of wind and solar around the country is just massively increasing the costs overall because for the extra we have to spend on transmission networks and they drive the old fossil fuel reliable power stations out of business. So look, it's a total mess, and I really do hope the coalition formally dumps it and goes to the
next election. To promise to unwind it. Otherwise we're going to face more and more economic destruction in this country.
We love to or certain parts of the COMMENTARYOT love to talk Astraya down. But here's the thing, Adam. Surely we obviously produce eight percentage. I think it is one percent of global emissions. Countries like the United States, China, India and Russia, they dwarf what we do. But it seems by right and saying it's Australia, I think you
might have said this. Australia, Canada and the EU want to play by the rules, but the other countries are large emitters that they're just paying lip service to them.
Yes, look it's just a joke.
I think it's fallen.
I think Australia's share has actually fallen from one point five percent about fifteen years ago to one point one percent. So even if we have our missions, it barely makes any difference at all. So we're just engaged in this huge economic self harm, self sacrifice, if you like, for
no reason. I mean China and India, just those two countries, their share of global emissions is now forty percent, and even the US is only thirteen percent, and China and India are not paying any attention at all to these so called Mitzia goals. They're rolling out hundreds of new coal fire power stations that also, by the way, building lots of nuclear power stations too in China, which is sensible,
but their emissions are going up massively. I mean, you have countries like you know, large countries like Britain, they have reduced their annual emissions by about two hundred and forty million tons of carbon dioxide a year, that's over the past twenty years, but China has increased hits by one point nine billion. So I so, you know, the UK is going to these huge efforts, massive you know, massive sacrifice, but it's not making a scrap of difference
to the global carbon emissions. And you know, net zero in the US is obviously not being not being pursued under the Trump administration, and as you said earlier, it's really just US and the EU and maybe Canada. And if you wait all of that by GDP, it's about fifteen percent of the world is paying any attention to net zero. So I think, you know, we're just the laughing stock. And you know, the idea that we're going to inspire other countries to change their mind, I think is just ludicrous.
Yeah, yeah, I'm sure that that is right, one hundred percent correct, Adam. Going back to your Washington d C days, all those probably months ago, Now what you read on Trump and Iran is he and he's moved those B two bombers. So he's obviously making it clear for anyone who's paying attention. Hey, I'm not just diddle dabbling around here. You know, we are serious. But do you imagine he'll assist Israel or what do you think?
Well, look, it's you know, it's hard to predict this. He's got this huge, this huge domestic political problem where I would say probably more than half of his base is magabase is fervent supporters. They don't want to get involved, they don't want the US getting involved in other wars. They're often sympathetic to Israel, but they just don't want they don't want Americans to die and spend more money
in the Middle East anymore. But as you know, I'm sure your listeners know, there's been a series of of failed wars in the Middle East over many years that have cost the US a lot and really haven't achieved a great deal. But on the other hand, you know this, Trump has said many times that Iran can't nuclear weapon, and their administration there in Taranta has said many times that do they intend to do just that? So it puts it puts the US present in a very difficult position.
He has moved those bombers. It doesn't necessarily mean anything. I don't think we won't know until something happens. It will happen suddenly, probably.
You know.
My understanding is Roel wants the US to join, obviously, but look, it's it's a it's a very vexed problem. And I'm not you know, I'm glad, I'm not I'm glad I'm not making the decision.
Yeah, a tough one both. Now, today we read in the Nine Papers that Treasurer Jim Charmers, who we call here JIMBO, has revealed the recently released book Abundance, which argues progressives need to rethink they're overly rules based approach to making the change they want. Had been a wake up call for the left of politics. Now you know, it's been it's been the catch cry of center right
government and to have smaller government. This is not this is not a new thing, but it took the work of American journalists theres A Reclient and Derek Thompson to convince the Treasury here. Do you actually think the unions will let him get rid of red tape if it reduces their power? I can't see it.
Well, no, look, I can't see it. And actually it's this labor government that has massively increased regulation so much. I mean, the IPA has done a lot of research on the growth and regulation over the years, and it's just extraordinary to see the figures. I mean, we've just had just over the last three years, we've had an increase in the number of regulatory roles, if you like, in the federal government. So he the bureaucrat's employed full
time to enforce regulation. That's gone up nineteen percent to one hundred and seven thousand staff. That's the match of So this is your things like well obviously net zero and a huge raft of regulations that go with that. You know, we don't talk much about the industrial relation system anymore, but that is extremely regulated, and you know that entails hundreds and thousands of regulations too. So you know,
we haven't got to the tax system yet. So look, I mean he's right that we do need to reduce regulation obviously. I mean we're in a period of extremely lackluster growth, extremely low productivity growth. You know, we've had declining living standards now for most of the last three years. So something has to be done. But you know, I must say I'm a little bit skeptical that the this government will be able.
To do it.
But you know, let's hope they can. They have a big majority, so they should try to do some good things.
Yeah, exactly. And the Productivity round Table which is upcoming, you say, anything come out of that. I mean we had the Jobs and Skill Summit when they were elected last time. I'd argue nothing much came out of that. Will anything come out of.
This, Well, look, let's hope so. But I'm a bit worried the Productivity Commission. I'm a little bit worried that it's been too captured by the left. I mean, it doesn't seem to advocate for lower taxation anymore. It's more partial to spending growth. And indeed, this whole debate, we have to remember it's spending is the problem. We need to reduce that. Sure, we do need to change how we raise revenue because we do it in a very inefficient way. But spending growth is out of control. It's
growing far faster than population growth or inflation. You know, you've got the NDIS in particular. You know, it's growing almost ten percent a year. It's completely out of control. So I do worry that this whole chat of tax reform will just lead the higher taxes. But we do need to simplify the system reduce the overall rates. I mean, you know, one fact I always say is our top marginal tax rate is higher than China's and they're supposed to be a communist country, So what does that say
about us? That's the case, So we need to get those rates down to encourage people to work and say and also, you know, one thing that's not talked about you in my sense is a lot of bright young Australians are leaving Australia to go work in the US or work in other jurisdictions where they pay far less tax because it's just so hard to get ahead here because of the tax burd Yeah.
Glad to chat, Adam, have a terrific weekend. Thanks so much for your time.
Mate, Yeah, thanksfully.
Good on your Adam, Crichton keep economists at the Institute of Public Affairs. Five to ten. It's amazing how quickly things happen. Donald Trump on Truth Social two minutes ago, We've completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran, including four do Hour, Natanz and Svahan. All planes are now outside of Iran airspace. A full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site. Four to doh. All planes are safety on their way home.
Congratulations to our great American warriors. There was not another military in the world that could have done this. Now is the time for peace. Think if your attention has says at the end of that message to this matter. So Donald Trump on Truth Social says, we've completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran. And he made that post in the last two minutes back in a second four to ten. All right, it's a minute to ten, just repeating that breaking news. And
I'm good to see. Look, I am very proud of the place I work. Two gb and four we see, but we were just first with that, and it's a catch up. Not that that bad as it does to me, because you know, I have great pride in this but assignment on the tech, says Luke. World War III has just begun well. Donald Trump says, We've completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran, including four Dough, Natanz and s Fahan. All planes are now
outside of Iran airspace. A full payload of bombers were dropped on the primary site, four Dough. That is largely going to be what people like me talk about now for some time. We'll try and get more on this story after the News which is nexts Australia. It's back to weekends with Luke Grant. Good morning, Thank you for listening. It's terrific to be with you on a very significant
day in the history of planet Earth. And that comes to our attention following a social media posting from the US President Donald Trump, who just before ten o'clock our time, posted, We've completed our very successful attack on three nuclear sites in Iran, including four Doh, Natanz and s Fahan. All planes are now outside of Iran airspace. A full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site, four Doh. All planes are safely on their way home. Congratulations to
our great American warriors. There's not another military in the world that could have done this. Now is the time for peace, and he finishes by saying, thank you for attention to this matter. Now there's reports everywhere just coming to light now the New York Times, where I often
go first to see what they're saying. The attack on these sites marks the first time since the Iranian Revolution in seventy nine that the US has sent its air force to strike major facilities inside the country an active war, they say, President Trump has now inserted the US military directly into an open conflict with Iran, which a succession of American presidents dating back to Jimmy Carter attempted to avoid.
Mister Trump made no effort in his truth social post to justify what administration officials said would be a preemptive attack to keep Iran from a final race for the bomb. Now he's been under pressure, says another from some of his most anti interventionist supporters, not to engage in the strikes. But in the last two days some of those supporters have shifted their public arguments to call for any action
to be contained and not a protracted US engagement. The three sites that Trump said were hit include Iran's two major uranium Enrichmond centers, the under Mountain facility at FORDOH, the larger Enrichmond plant at Natans, which Israel struck several days ago with smaller weapons. The third site, near the ancient city of Isfahan, is where Iran is believed to keep its near bomb grade enriched uranium, which inspectors saw
just two weeks ago. With those areas being destroyed, it would set back the Uranian program by years, unless it has yet under detected parallel facilities. Earlier in this day, a series of B two bombers, which could carry the type of bunker buster bombs being considered, particularly for four dhers nuclear facility, were tracked heading west from Missouri, believed to be headed to Guam. Now they say it's not clear whether those planes were in fact the ones used.
The latest is from the New York Post. The United States dropped bombs on three nuclear sites in Iran. President Trump announced bringing the US military directly into Israel's war with Iran after days of uncertainty about whether he would intervene, and as I quoted to you, he said, all planes are now outside of Iran airspace, adding that a full payload of bombs had been dropped on four to doh. All planes are safely on their way home. This has
been constantly updated. We're seeking to speak to a couple of commentators in this space that you know that you know well, you're here with me from time to time, and if they're free to do that and not able to do that, then we'll obviously we'll go to that straight away. A US official i'm hearing said on condition
of anonymity. Given the sensitive nature of the information on all of this has alerted television networks that the President was expected to address the nation obviously the US now This site, Fordoh was first revealed to the world in two thousand and nine. The European and American intelligence agencies had founded earlier. For the past sixteen years, I'm told officials were worried it was too deep and too fortified
to strike. The weapons believed to be dropped in the American raid were designed specifically four to four to zero and similar sites in mind. By the time the US aircraft bombed the Natan's nuclear site, the International Atomic Energy Agency assessed that all the centrifuges in its hall, about one hundred feet underground, had been knocked out by Israel's attack on the electrical system that fed the machines, which
apparently spin at supersonic speeds. The US bombs would have likely done far more damage to the facility, the same one that the Bush and Obama administrations hit more than fifteen years ago in a cyber attack. That covert attack was undertaken because both Bush and Obama considered bombing to be too risky. Just being told that the Defense Department. According to an official who remained anonymous, a number of
American B two bombers were used to hit Fordoh. The bombers can carry the needed thirty thousand pound bunker buster bombs that can penetrate into the underground facility. So it is. We still don't know if it's the two planes we were told about earlier in the day that were headed apparently to Guam, but interestingly might well have ended up in Iran. Just some feedback from listeners, Luke, It'll be interesting to see how Iran's allies, including Russia, react, Yes, Wayne,
it will, Luke. Any other president would have held a press conference from the White House. This is so wrong. Well, I'm told it just happened, Shari. I don't know that they have. Maybe maybe I have some memory of Biden doing something similar straight after an attack. I'm only going for memory. You might you might have a point. He will be speaking. That's certainly the news out of the administration. Hi. Look, I hope the American strikes don't put large gatherings in jeopardy,
as there is one in Sydney this afternoon. All right, gaz, thank you. I'll get to Dr Malcolm Davis from the Australian Strategic Policy Institute in just a moment. Donald Trump says, Stephen will go down in history for saving the world from an evil regime. I consider it a present. I think it's Stephen's birthday today. Thank you, Chris, says mister Abenzi. Miss Wog will probably criticize the US through this, Chris,
thank you. Well, they're in it now, says Cherie. So much for the prom of not getting America involved in any more overseas wars? What if again? Based on lies? No fan of Donald Trump? Fair enough. Another listener says, Bob morning, Luke. It's so terribly sad we cannot all get on. You'd think by now we'd learn from our mistakes, but we don't. Australians are all very lucky that home is on the other side of the earth. Very fair point. Now.
Malcolm Davis is a senior analyst Strategic Policy Institute and joins me on the line. Malcolm, so good of you to give us time so quickly after this news has broken. I was reporting earlier like everyone else, that these three B two aircraft were headed we were told to Guam. We don't know yet if the three that we were reporting on are the three that have struck Iran. I guess I should ask you, someone so expert in this space, how surprised are you this has happened now this morning our time.
Well, look, I think that the two week period that President Trump talked about fairly clearly was designed to to basically generate an opportunity for surprise. It was clearly disinformation. It was about tricking the Iranians into thinking that there would be no US attack on Iran before that two week period was up. Clearly that's not the case, because they've gone in this morning and attacked for Doner Twans
in Ishlaham. And I think that the B twos that you mentioned that were flying out to Guam, as possible, they could have been a plaint an actual fact, the actual B twos that did the strike this morning came from a different direction, and so that's the advantage of stealth aircraft. You can't see them on radar, and so therefore they're very difficult to track and it makes surprise that much more easy.
Yeah, fascinating this the Iranian scene in all the and look, we don't know what conversations going behind the scenes, but in their reporter commentary they weren't going to ever stop uranium enrichment or the development of their program. And in fact, they were suggesting that they're not going to seriously reentered negotiations until Israel stops. And it seems to me that Trump might well have said heard that said, well, you know now to time.
Look, the Iranians were never going to give up their nuclear program, and that nuclear program had ambitions towards nuclear weapons. I think every serious analyst I basically would agree with that assessment. Uranium enrichment is Iran's path to nuclear weapons. They were not prepared to give up that enrichment, even though they had no need for such an enrichment capability.
So I think that Israelis and the Americans recognized the Iranians were not sincere about a negotiated settlement because the Iranians wanted the option to have nuclear weapons. That was unacceptable to Israel because an Iranian nuclear weapons capability would essentially be an existential threat to the state of Israel. So I think that the Israelis were definitely correct to
launch the attacks they did some weeks ago. But now the Americans are correct to join in the fight and try to take down this Iranian nucleus threat.
And look, they won't faired income would I the ability to have an independent that's what it is, inspection of facilities. They were pulling the other one, surely the Iranians.
I mean, they were never going to prevent that. And I think any deal that had been signed would have quickly come apart because Iranian cheating would have been discovered the International Atomic Energy Agency and the lead up to the Israeli attacks made it clear that the Iranians were undertaking undeclared new correctivities at undeclared sites. So the Iranians
were cheating before this war big even began. So I think that whilst people would always favored diplomacy and a diplmatic resolution on this occasion, when you're talking about the literal survivor of the Israeli people. Israel was correct to launch the attack that it did, and the United States was correct to join to make sure that Iran's nucle facilities, especially for though, were no longer no longer available for Iran to used to get Nikong web.
How concerned should we be in what Russia and others who are a lot closer to Iran, what they might do next.
Well, I think Russia has its hands full in Ukraine and has ambitions beyond Ukraine against NATO, so I think that I don't see Russian joining this fight. China supposedly is staying out of it, but then again, you had two Chinese owned seven forty seven freighters touched down in Tehran on secret flights just a few days ago unloading cargo. So I have no idea what that was about. But it's possible that China may have supplied some sort of
technology to Iran. The IBORITHM really getting in militarily. But I think that this one strike is not going to solve the problem. The Americans are going to have to do multiple strikes on particularly on large targets like Plorda to finish that job. And then the issue is that unless there's regime change in Tehran, there's the rural risk that even though we'll take the runnings a lot longer now, they will try to reconstitute their nuclear programs. So this
problem is not resolved at this point in time. We are in the state of trying to deny Araun the ability to get nucle weapons, but they will struggle very hard to get nucle weapons.
How does Iran respond, Malcolm.
They will probably respond we have attacks on US forces in the region. I think that's probably the next step everyone is focusing on. That would then justify the Americans fighting back under Article fifty one of the UN Charter, which is the right of self defense. And you would then see the US launching attacks across the length and breadth of Iran in terms of military targets to try and essentially wipe out Iranian's military forces. Ultimately, where that leads,
potentially is some sort of regime change scenario. Ideally, it happens from within in terms of a popular color revolution as they're called, where the people rise up and throw out the leadership or the leadership flees to Moscow and then you have some sort of new government come in that is more friendly to the West, and that helps solve a lot of the long term problems, including the
nucle weapons issue. If that doesn't happen, if we don't get regime changed, then we're back to this scenario of a hostile regime in Tehran that seeks nucle weapons more so than ever now. And so you have this as an ongoing issue.
And I can't help but think the Hooties by extension, they would probably now see any American flag, vessel, bead, military, or any anything fair game.
Absolutely, so I think the Americans are probably on full combat alert in the region, not just in terms of Iran, but across the right right across the Middle East region. And you know it's not just the Hutis. You have Hamas and Hezbollah, if you have a running proxies in Iraq and Syria. There's US bases all over the region. So the US would be on full combat combat alert, as would US allies such as the United Kingdom. Australia has some personnel in I think it's the Middle East,
but they're in a joint headquarters. They're not involved necessarily in direct combat actions. But I don't see Australia getting involved in this at all. But I think that what we could do is backfill some of the US forces, so the US could send additional forces of its own to the region and we take up their roles in the pacifect.
Malcolm, I really appreciate your knowledge, your expertise, in your time on a Sunday morning. Thank you so much, my pleasure, great to talk to you. Malcolm Davis, Senior analyst at the Strategic Policy Institute. Wow, there's a lot in that, Isn't there a lot in that? And you've just tuned in the breaking news? Is Donald Trump on truth social as posted, We've completed our very successful attack on three nuclear sites in a run, including four do Natans and Svahan.
All planes are now outside of Iranian airspace, a full payload of bombs dropped on the primary site four to doh. All planes are safety on their way home. Just some more reaction from the United States. And by the way, I'm told Donald Trump will speak to the world at around midday our time. We will bring you all of that. Donald Trump will speak at midday, and as I say, we will bring you all of that now, Yeah, just
some updates here. While the attacks on four Doh and the Tarns were expected, Isfahan was actually the more complex and a less discussed target. Laboratories there did work on how to convert uranium into the form that would be needed to actually produce a weapon. Most of the near bomb grade fuel enriched to sixty percent, was in specialty casks deep inside one of the many laboratory laboratories and storage sites. Their locations were known by international inspectors. At
least until a few weeks ago. It was unclear whether Iran had moved those supplies as some Iranian officials suggested. Senator Lindsay Graham, Republican from South Carolina and one of the most vocal Iran defense hawks on Capitol Hill, celebrated the strike, saying in a social media post it was a right call. Graham had been in regular contact with Trump to argue in favor of the strikes. He said,
the regime deserves it. In a post in the last few minutes, three senior Iranian officials, speaking on the condition of anonymity, said they believed American forces had bombed four Doh and Natans at around two thirty am in Iran. So confirmation from inside Iran, even though from anonymous sources, you didn't understand that breaking US this morning, the United States have conducted bombing attacks on three nucleo sites in Iran, namely four doh Natans and Sfahan. The President will speak
at midday. This is Weekends with Luke Grant. It's half past ten on weekends on two GB and four BC with Luke Grant, and we're providing coverage of this significant world news that to Donald Trump announcing on social media truth social that the United States have completed an attack on three nucleo sites in Iran. I want to bring in now do Ali Memori, an expert on around from Bacon University. Doctor memory thank you very much for your time,
Thank you for having me not at all now. You're engaged in all these things and have a level of expertise. But did did you see this as a likely outcome that the US would be directly involved as of today?
No, I wouldn't expect, to be honest, I wouldn't expect that Donald Trump would risk such a dangerous move and take the entire region to a very unknown future.
How does a run respond do you imagine, I mean you advised local governments, I think the Iraqi government. How would you anticipate the Iranian response? What would it.
Be, yes, was the Erchy Prime minister. But we've been in contact with your Anian government and I know the mentality is there, how they think and how they react to such a thread. The situation for them is very critical.
It's existential threats, especially that US and they both are talking publicly now about change of region policy and about possible division and spirited the country, and Urnians see before them set to clearly what happened to Era capitals and free what happened in Libya in Syria, so they see
not any choice before themselves to fight back. And they already announced that they have several options on tables, including including hormon estate with Minds or with other capacities that they have just to let you know that twenty five percent of all passed from Hormos strain, which is a very big amount for the global trading. And they can attack.
They already said it that we do if we get attacked by by Americans, they will attack us basis which is spirit in the region, in the goal in Era, just in Iraq, they have twenty five hundred forces, and they might even consider attacking US diplomatic missions in.
The region as Goodness made it. What does it mean for Israel? I mean, is is there attention now devoted from Israel or does the ramp up their refords in bombing Israel.
From Ezrael decided, it seems that Benjamin Natanya will succeed in bringing and the dragging Americans to survive his government, which was his intention from the beginning for this attack. But from Israeli from the Iranian side, they will continue attacking Ezrael as well as they've been attacked by really just last night as well. So it seems that Iranians will fight on the both sides with all capacities.
Is there any way that the Iranian would have anticipated this? There was reports earlier today doctor that three B twos were leaving the US headed for Guam, and obviously three or would I assume three B twos were in fact coming from the other direction to carry out this bombing? Uh the fact that Donald Trump said, will think about this for two weeks, I mean, this has been the ultimate diversion, hasn't The Iranians would not have expected this, surely.
Yeah, I agree.
I imagine that they had anticipated and also had some calculation about advitisent, especially that the Urinian for the minister before esay in the talk with the European countries for the ministers these counterparts, he said that we don't know how to trust Americans. Again, we see that the entire negotiation from the beginning was the trap by the Americans
to get exposed to this situation. As he continued that if we can get involved with retalier, it seems to me and I assume that it Anians have already prepared for such scenario and they have their cards ready to retaliate.
Yeah, all right, doctor, thank you so much for your time and short night us. I really appreciate that doctor Alimmuri an expert on around from Deacon University. In fact, I'm told he advises the Iraq government on defense matters in that region. Apologies, that line broke up once or twice. It was a bit difficult to fully comprehend all of that, but I think there was enough there to get a sense of just if we didn't know already how serious
this is. Got some further updates to bring to your attention. Again, if you've just joined US Donald Trump announcing and he'll speak at midday. Out of time. I'm told that the US has completed an attack on three nuclear sites in Iran, including four doh N, Tans and Sfahan. Trump says all planes are now outside of Iran airspace. He says a full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site, which is four doh And for a quick aside, given our main man and great rate, Ben Fordham's nickname for
some is Fdah. I call him Ben because I respect him. It is a time to be difficult to be saying all of this, But there you are now in the New York Times, they're saying. John Ratcliffe, the CIA Director, and joined other officials, including Marco Rubio, the National Security Advisor and Secretary of State, at the White House, where they went into the Situation Room to monitor the strikes and their aftermath. Ratcliffe had been Trump and the White
House regularly this week on the Iranian nuclear program. Experts said the decision by Trump to strike Iran mark the start of an unpredictable chapter of security in politics in the Middle East. Ray Taker, a senior fellow for Middle East Studies at the Council on Foreign Relations says it's
a new phase and a potentially problematic one. Iranian political leaders will most likely face pressure inside the country to respond, possibly by launching counter attacks on Australian military sites or proxies. Previous my previous guest said exactly that they might even strike diplomatic posts in the region. They say the leaders, the Iranian leaders were very humiliated in every possible way that makes them vulnerable to their population and to domestic critics.
They would have to essentially restore pride in some way. It's twenty two to eleven, nineteen minutes to eleven o'clock. It is one three one eight seven three. With apologies to our regular guests, including my mate Stephen Fennick, who we won't be hearing from today because we have decided to just provide rolling coverage following us again. If you've just joined US and O people, tune in and tune out. Donald Trump announcing on truth Social just under an hour ago.
In fact, about fifty minutes ago, we've completed a very successful attack on three nucleo sides in Iran, including four do Natanz and Esfahan. He says, all planes are now outside of Iran air space. I understand he'll speak in around an hour and twenty minutes and we'll bring that to you. And we're talking to experts and others as we make our way through understanding this story. I guess we're at the point now where we wonder, what does Iran do? Heaven forbid thinking about that too long is
very concerning. But what I now want to do is get to the United States and Nine's excellent US correspondent Lauren to Marzi, who you might recall from the streets of la a couple of weeks back, had to deal with one or two issues that she wished she hadn't had to deal with. But she's on the line now and can bring us up to date with what the people of the US are thinking about all of this. Lauren, I hope you will thank you for your time. Hi, Luke, So what do you think I remember coming to work
and talking about three B twos headed to Guam. It seemed to be the case. And you know, I guess somewhat out of the blue today when Donald Trump was saying look over there, he was actually doing a look over here. He didn't want to wait two weeks and he had plans to act today.
Yes, certainly you had that just two days ago, where you had the US President saying he was going to give this two week timeline for to come to the table on getting rid of their nuclear program, and instead it has been just two days with American warplanes now dropping these bombs on three different nuclear sites in Iran.
What we are learning as this comes now from the White House and we expect to hear from the President in just over an hour's time, is that Israeli officials had been alerted to this attack shortly beforehand, and some members of Congress as well. But certainly, by and large this has come as a very fast moving and rapid development for certainly America and the world watching on. It is a serious escalation. Now the United States is now entering Israel's war against Iran.
Yeah, and I guess the next move or what happens next is a key point here. I've spoken to experts who said the Iranians might just go for Middle Eastern American sight, you know, embassies and that kind of thing. Who's to know. But the other point we don't know is just how capable Iran is. I guess you wouldn't be doing this unless you knew what you'd be doing next. Do you know from what government are saying in the whispers around the White House, what the fees are in regards.
To that, Well, certainly right now, US Bass, right throughout the Middle East has been put on the highest level of alert, So it gives you a little bit of indication that they are taking no chances here. And we know that the posturing over the past week or so has really changed for America era there. We've had these warships brought into the region to make sure that American assets and bases are backed up. But as to what happens next, well, Donald Trump says this should bring peace.
You know, Iran must have now agree to end this war. So as to whether or not Iran is going to entertain any sort of conversation with the United States feels unlikely. And what we've heard from the Iranian leaders that they have ruled out any kind of conversations with America at this point in time and said that they will rebuild their nuclear assets if they were to be taken out. So it is certainly a very uncertain moment and we will wait now to see what Donald Trump has to say in the next.
Hour, Lauren, to help you understand this so called split amongst the MAGA group, we had Tucker Carlson the other day have a fight with Ted Cruz over the population of Iran, because I think he is one of many amongst that group who think that America should stay away from foreign wars and the like. Why does that exist and how dangerous is this for the you know, the people that really love Trump that they might end up being split.
Well, certainly you've seen that massive device over the past week or so in the Mega movement about how Donald Trump should react to the conflict between Israel obviously US ally and Iran. And you've got many of these Mega people saying that, you know, you simply cannot get involved in these foreign wars and we should be focusing on what is happening here in the United States, and others who are vocally saying that now is the time to drop the bombs on Iran. So it is very divisive
among his fan base. And as to whether this changes, you know, the fabric of the Make America Greater Agan movement moving forward, it very likely could, but you know, there is just so much unknown at this point in time and about what are the next movements for America and that will impact that as well.
Yeah, you're a style Lauren. Thanks so much for your time. Appreciated.
Thanks Luke.
Good on you. Lauren TOMARVII in the US with the very latest that she's hearing from nine Usual see Laurens reports no Doubt on nine News tonight. Lauren was you know, a large part of me hates doing this, but she was caught up in the la Street rights and she was she was hit in the in the leg by that rubber bullet. That doesn't define her because she's a brilliant reporter whatever it is in the US issues like that, or I've sent her to entertainment pieces and without being
part of nine, she's a colleague. I was really worried about her. I reached out by a email and she replied just the other day saying that she was she was okay. I really you know, people go out in the street and do that kind of stuff just reporting news should be able to do that without having a rubber bullet aimed at them. It seemed that that's what it was. Anyway, that's Lauren if you didn't know, But She's not defined by that because she's a brilliant reporter.
One three, one eight seven three. This is Weekends on two GB and four BC with Luke Grant. We are bringing you coverage of the US dropping three significant bombs on three nuclear sites in Iran. More after this eight to eleven. It is one three, one eight seven three the news this morning. The United States has carried out attacks on three nuclear sites in Iran. Donald Trump will
speak at around midday. We'll bring you that as best we can at that point, and I'll speak to Michael Shubridge, a security expert who we spoke to last week on the show about this and other issues. He'll join us after eleven o'clock. We won't not have our eyes fixed on what's happening here in Ascolia, of course, and in Sydney and Brisbane at around the place. We'll do a bit of a reset after eleven, but Michael Schubridge will join us and we'll get his expertise on this. There's
plenty of reaction from listeners. I thank you for that. I'll get to that because it's important to know what you think. And there's some further news on this developing in America that I get to as well. So there's moving bits everywhere here. Brett says, Luke, the US should tell Iran leadership that any retaliatory strikes and they will flatten Tehran. Make them think twice before action. Thank you, Brett. Another one, Luke, have a great holiday, well owned break
all right, Thanks for your note. Thank you so much for that. Luke. Good to hear that our Foudoh will still be on the radio Monday. The other one who's been sorted out, Well done to the Trump star. I hope you have a good holiday, Melodie. Thank you. It's very kind of you, Luke. I just hope China doesn't do anything regarding Taiwan now the US is involved elsewhere,
worrying times. Rob, thank you for your note. Appreciate that Luke's any interesting story on USA media former USA politician about Israel complaining about Iran's nuclear weapons despite the fact Israel having their own. Well, Colin, now you've come to me on that issue a few times this weekend. I've
got note. I'll get time now to take that any further, but noted, I guess I should say, Kerry, San're interesting that we have a professor at Deacon University who advises a rak on defense and speaks out about where will fight back. Perhaps he didn't hear the leader in Iran state many times, we will not give up our nuclear all through us attempts to negotiate. All right, thank you for getting in touch. I think Trump is a good, strong leader, says PJ. And strong leaders need to make
difficult decisions. I'm not saying he's perfect, but he's strong. The decision, however, is extremely dangerous, could very well spark a larger scale war. Trump would be lying to himself. He did not think that was a possibility. PJ. Thank you for getting in touch. And someone said, where does that leave? Here we go, Richard, Thank you Richard In Brisbane, those who formulated the lame taco acronym with regard to Trump, a taco taco stands for Trump always chickens out. Trump
always chickens out. Richard says, where does that leave those who formulated that? They must be scratching their collective head? Thank you, Richard. He appears not to have tacoed this fair point five to eleven. Now it's almost time for the news at eleven o'clock. Reminding you that we understand Donald Trump will speak at midday given the significance of
what's happened this morning. Again, if you've just joined us, the US have completed an attack, or what Donald Trump describes as a very successful attack on three nuclear sites in Iran, they being four doh Natanz and Sfahan or planes now outd side of Iran airspace. Some of the commentary is well, as you imagine, quite emotional. I have to say that one commentator from America says, there's plenty of people saying that this has started world War three.
In fact, he says this will stop World War three because Iran had no interest in refusing to develop nuclear weapons and it was just a matter of time. So his view is that this will prevent world War three. Finally, he says, Donald Trump showed Iran there's no path for them to a nuclear weapon. At some point, someone seriously,
I guess, had to make that point. Well, Donald Trump is today made that point, some would say, rightly emphatically again repeated the news three nuclear sites in Iran bombed by the US. The news is next across Australia, It's back to weekends with Luke Grant and a very good morning to you. Thank you for listening in Sitney on two GB, in Brisbane on four BC on a very significant day, the day when the US has attacked three
nuclear sites in Iran. This was announced by or confirmed by President Donald Trump on truth Social He said, We've completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran, including four dough Natanz and Esfahan. All planes, he said, are now outside of Iranian airspace. We're monitoring news everywhere and we're speaking to experts both on and
off air to get you the very latest. Now I've I've just myself heard extraordinary ad mission from Sean Hannity, who is one of the I guess you'd say senior or star personalities on Fox News in the US, probably commentators, the better descriptor. He has spoken as I thought he might have to. Donald Trump have a listened to this.
I can confirm it was six bunker buster bombs that were used in that one, on that one fortified deeply buried inside that mountain site, the one that everybody worried about, the one that Israel was not going to be capable of taking out unless they went nuclear.
Remarkable. I'll play that for you again that's Sean Hannity very close to the White House from Trump. Well, I nearly said Trump News. It nearly is whoops from Fox News who spoke to President Donald Trump. By the way, he'll speak to the people of the US end of the world in around fifty minutes, were told, and we'll bring that to you live. But again, this is Sean Hannity. We were told that and by Donald Trump that the attacks were on three nuclear sites in around these bunco
buster bombs on the B two's. We thought that there were one for each site. But again Hannity said this, I.
Can confirm it was six bunk or buster bombs that were used in that one on that one fortified deeply buried inside that mountain site, the one that everybody worried about, the one that Israel was not going to be capable of taking out unless they went nuclear.
Yeah, there are and reports continue out of the US. One reason, according to The New York Times, the US may have struck multiple sites was that it's intelligence agencies estimated that Israeli attacks only set back around its nuclear program by about six months. The assessments also concluded that further Israeli attacks were unlikely to do more damage now, as I have so to other commentators asking the obvious,
what happens next? And again. The New York Times say that experts say that depends on the extent of the US strikes on Iran. If Iranian leaders perceive the attacks as limited to nucleo sites, they might be more measured in their response. But if the attacks were seen as broad, Iranian leaders might face pressure for full fledged retaliation, such as striking American bases. One risk experts said was that Iran might see a disproportionate attack as only the only
way to restore to Terrence. Jonathan Panakoff, director of the Scoutcraft Middle East Security Initiative at the Atlantic Council, saying, then you're looking at a significant escalation, a spiral that could get out of a hand quickly. Let's have a chatting out. Michael Schubridge. We spoke to Michael just a week ago, a director of Strategic Analysis Australia whose first class on all of this stuff. He's on the line, Michael,
we speak again so soon. Who would have thought? And I'm interested in your take on the lead up to this. A couple of days back, Donald Trump is saying, you know, effectively, Iran's got two weeks, and then earlier today we were told that there were three B two's likely headed for Guam, and then we didn't even get to I think ten o'clock our time, and you know they've had the attacks. This has been a master diversion, hasn't it? Or is this predictable in your mind?
Well, I think if the Iranians were banking on gosh, we've got two weeks, they wouldn't have stayed in control of the regime since the nineteen seventy nine revolution. So I don't think they would have been taking Trumpet his word. In fact, there's no trust between America and Iran and hasn't been a since nineteen So yes, it was a diversion from Donald Trump. But it does make his a call in the same thing where he announced the strikes, now is the time for peace look extremely hollow from
the Iranian side. So I think you're right. Look, you've said some reactions. People are saying, well what next? And the Iranian regime now is the one that we all need to look to to see what do they do? They've got some options, Yeah.
Tell me what those options are?
If you don't mind, Michael, Well they can. The US has about nineteen different military facilities in the Middle East, which means within striking distance of Iranian ballistic missiles and drones. It's got a massive base in Qatar, naval base in Bahrain, so the Iranians can attack some or lots of those military facilities. And remember Israel and the US are busily working really hard to defend Israel against Iranian strikes. So this now widens a round set of targets and makes
the missile and drone defense task much harder. They go on. Then there's the international oil supply, much of which goes through the straits of JR Muz, a narrow strait that would be reasonably easy to mine and minds might sound old fashioned, but they're very effective or strike tankers going up and down there. So Iran could really choose to escalate this a lot, or they could do a symbolic set of much more limited strikes.
Yeah, things are so different. I mentioned before we started speaking, Michael, that Sean Hannity on Fox News has confirmed the number of bombs He's apparently spoken to Donald Trump. He's just said this.
Toll now from a reliable source that for Dough they it is gone. They believe it is that it has been wiped out.
I guess Donald Trump will set this straight when he speaks in around forty five minutes time. If that's the case, If that's gone, what do you think of that?
Well, that's a major part of the Uranian nuclear program, So that's where they have been doing their enrichment of uranium to not weapons grade, but getting close. Like when you get you need ninety percent enrichment to have a bomb. They were at about sixty percent for enough for about nine or ten weapons. It's much easier to go from sixty to ninety percent then get from you know, under one percent to sixty percent, which is our natural uranium turns up. So that's a major blow to them producing
weapons grade uranium. But their existing stockpile I think was at Isaphon, one of the other places that's been bombed. But the Iranians have had lots of warning, they may
have dispersed some of their holdings. So it's a major setback to the Ranian program, particularly if they also destroyed the the town's underground and Richmond site, which was a very big en Richmond site I suppose battle damage assessment needs to be available first, and Sean Hannity is many things, but I don't think he's an expert battle damage assessment person.
Beautifully put by you, Michael. I've also seen reports that in Israel they're saying to the population, don't go to work tomorrow. Work's been canceled. Stay near a bunker. They're expecting the Iranians to come back hard at them.
Obviously, Yes, of course, Iran has been losing this conflict so far. I mean probably in a broader sense since the Master attacks, but certainly in the last week with the destruction of a lot of the Iranian military command and also a damage to their missile sides, production sides and launchers, and they've been so they're on the back foot. I'm not thinking that they're in a great position to
really take amazingly effective steps striking back. I think it'd be more like a drunken boxer flailing.
Out right and Iran's allies, what'll they do, What'll they say?
Well, this is interesting, isn't it. Because Vladimir Putin is a very close partner of Iran, He's dependent on Iranian military supplies, particularly drones, in his war in Ukraine. He's producing Iranian designs now, but I think he's still got a dependency there. China's been a partner of Iran, but they're very quiet at the moment, and North Korea is busy helping Vladimir Putin rebuild Kursk, so I don't think
they're going to get any help. And the Egyptian leader Sisi called Iran and said, we think pieces the way, we wouldn't support US strikes. But that is a million miles from any Middle Eastern country joining the Iranian side. That is not going to happen.
Already, I've had listeners suggest and this will not out be something that people talk about that sleep are sells within the United States. You can't discount anything, can you.
No. Iran has built heavily armed terrorist proxies in the Middle East, and it has had a long campaign against America, calling it the Great Satan. Remember the calls Israel the Little Satan and America the Great Satan. This will only have made some of the more extreme people associated with the Iranian regime keen to strike back at America any way they can. And it's interesting to think in a few years from Now, what's this do with radical violent
Islamic terrorism. It probably gives that a whole boost in the arms.
Yeah, And just in regards to how this politically plays out in the United States, Michael Contrump does decide to do what's happened this morning to Iran, would there have been other members of the United States government who have to agree to this or can sde that that's the right way forward? Do you know how that works internally?
Well?
I think the US Congress are in the middle of an armorss or with the President about whether he has powers to use the military this way. It's an armorous lover war powers. But I think the executive power of the US President lets him do this in these circumstances and inform Congress, So I think legally he will be okay. But I think the bigger problem will be Trump thinks this is going to be a limited, very successful mission. What if there are a considerable number of US military
casualties from Iranian broader strikes against US bases. What if the American military presence in countries like Qatar and the UAE gets threatened with ejection because it's bringing a conflict down on their heads and what if the world's oil suppliers disrupted. All of those things will stop Trump from being able to just do a limited subcontractor effort for Israel destroying the nuclear sites and then getting.
Out outstanding analysis. Michael, No surprises there, my friends, stay well. Thank you so much for your time.
Thanks for good on you.
Yeah you too, outstanding Michael Schubridge, Director Strategic Analysis Australia. And again I really thank Michael for jumping on the line and my team here today doing brilliant work. Glama. Just to sit here and talk with these experts and bring you what's happening is outstanding. Thank you all. It's coming up to twenty past eleven. We'll take a back after this. It's Weekends with Luke Grant on two GBN, four BC and our app listeners around Australia. Thank you
for your company. We are providing rolling coverage after the US has bombed the nuclear sites in Iran. Donald Trump announced this at ten to ten this morning on his social media platform. He's due to speak at midday. We will bring you that live already. Sean Hannity at Fox News, who has Donald Trump's phone number, has been in touch and we're listening to some of Hannity's words. He's suggested that they dropped six of those bunker buster bombs on the main site four doh fordw and we've had other
attacks at Natantan s Fahan. These are the nuclear sites in Iran, hann It. He has made the point that the Iranian foreign Minister A Ragchi said in this type in just yesterday, and you look to see what might have led this happening this morning our time. This is the Iranian foreign minister yesterday.
We are not seeking negotiations. It is the Americans who want talks. They've sent messages several times, very serious ones, but we made it explicitly clear to them that as long as this aggression and invasion continues, there is absolutely no room for talk or just pomacy. We are engaged in legitimate self defense and this defense will not stop under any circumstances. We have nothing to discuss with the United States, which is a partner in these crimes.
Yeah, so I guess if you hear that, that's obviously through a translator, I think on Fox in the United States. I mean, when you hear that there was no opportunity for a sit down and a chin wag about these issues, and they made their mind up whether or not that's what they were saying away from the cameras. I guess
we don't know now. Some further updates. Mehdi Mahammad Mahammadi with apologies, a senior advisor to Muhammad Gallabaf, the speaker of Iran's parliament, said in a post on social media that Iran had been anticipating attacks on Fodoh for several nights, saying the site had been evacuated a long time ago and the damages are not irreversible, he wrote, adding you cannot bomb knowledge. Interesting Also, Israel was alerted that the bombs were going to be dropped at some point before
the strikes happened. The President Donald Trump spoke with Benjamin nettan Yahoo afterward, according to someone who knew but was not authorized to speak publicly. Shortly after the US struck teen nucleosides in Iran, Israel placed more stringent wartime restrictions on civilian signaling a greater threat from Iran. I raised this with Michael Schubridge, the Home Front Command, the Israeli military unit. They issued guidelines to civilians will now only
allow essential workers to report in person. All gatherings, including educational activities, are banned. On Wednesday, Israel had temporarily lifted those restrictions and allowed gatherings of up to thirty people. That again goes along, and we're all playing a guessing game here what the retaliation will be, what the response
from Iran will be now? The New York Times saying the president, who campaigned on an American first platform that was predicated on the US not engaging in any wars abroad during his time in office, has now decided to enter a war that puts American troops at risk. New York Times saying American officials who review yued intelligence reports that Iran was prepared to strike US military bases and equipment in the Middle East should the US join Israel's
war against the country. Again, these are things that will develop over the next little bit. Plenty of reaction from listeners. Thank you so much for giving us his views. Happy to share them with our listeners. Not all of them directly related to this, most of them certainly are. Luke, Thank god you can pronounce nuclear correctly. You're a man of education, all right. Thanks Terry and Simon, thank you for your note. Karen says, morning, Luke. The big question
is why Iran was building nuclear weapons. We can only speculate, Karen, thank you excellent presentation. I bet you're expecting a quiet day, well, David, not unfair to say that, but thank you for your feedback. Trump reportedly tells rauters that they'd stop immediately or I'll get hit again. Fox is saying thirty Tomahawk missiles were used as well. I've seen those reports and thank you for getting in touch. I'm just now relying on Look.
I knew that Sean Hannity and Donald Trump would talk, which is why when we saw him on air, we thought it was important to listen in. But I know Hannity he's made mention of the Tomahawk missiles as well. But we'll hear from the President himself in half an hour. I just don't know about the speculation now, but thank you. Good a Richard, he says Luke. Hi Michael Schubridge's Great Overview. Australia also needs to go on alert at our borders, watch internally for sleeper cells here Asi. I said a
few years ago that there are active suspect terrorists in Australia. Well, that may or may not be the case, Richard. I guess the she'll be right. Australian attitude will be well, this is a problem for the United States, and I think initially that that's not unfair. We'll hear from government at some point. The Estonian government, I mean, they play no role in this, so I don't know if there's if there's anything that they have to say of much consequence,
but we'll bring that to you. Thank you, mate for getting in touch. I understand the Benjamin net and Yahoo will make an address after Donald Trump speaks at midday. Again, we'll bring you as much of that as we can. As it happens, you'll hear that here Live one three one eight seven three. Thank you for the texts zero four six zero eight seven three eight seven three. Daniel says Donald J. Trump has to be the greatest leader of all time for peace and freedom. Today should be
declared World Peace Day. Somewhat provocative, Daniel, thank you. Political rulers of Iran are already safely exiled to Russia in a pre strike deal, says Alan approved by Trump. A ran now little more than a giant petrol station without a proprietor. I wonder who'll emerges a new leader of liberated Iran, says Alan, Thank you. Alan Simon says what a scary world. Can't argue with that, mate, Thank you for getting in touch. Ken says, how now am I going to meet with Trumpston?
Now?
Well, fair enough, that's an issue for a later day. I would say, mate, Brett, thank you for your note. Why on earth did Trump attack Fodoh Leavey? I could understand, but not Ben? Yeah, Alan, We've done that joke several times. In fact, Ben's been in touch. Unfortunate, isn't it? Thank you mate, Good day, Luke. Do you think Australia will be asked to be involved in any way? So what do you think will be the view of the peace
of the Foreign Minister? Well, I think sev there'll be no role other than rescuing Australians who may or may not be in Iran, which reminds me and brings me back to a story I shared with you yesterday. You'll remember that we had a listener get in touch with us around eleven, telling us about her mum in her seventies and how she was trying to get out of Iran, and she had been told that you have to go to a certain border and you receive a code and
then you can cross the border. And my listener was very concerned about her mum because despite the fact that this procedure was what she was seeking to follow, when she got to the border, much of the support was in fact all of it was Mia. And I said, on behalf of my listener, who I didn't name that contact DFAT, which we did, and they did come back to us, and this must be very concerning for my listener with her mum in Iran. And again I won't
name this listener. We sought a statement from DFAT and we got this DEFAT is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian who wishes to leave Iran. Owing to our privacy obligations, were unable to provide further comment. Somewhat predictably and to a less extent understandably, I mean, we.
Gave no.
Identification at all of either my listener or her mum. They said, DEFAT is deploying consular staff to Asherbaijan, including it it's border crossing to support Australians departing Iran. They say, we asked Australians in Iran who wished to depart to do it if it is safe. So we're working with Australians registered in Iran to facilitate board acrossing codes and
acknowledge that unstable internet connectivity in Iranas make it more difficult. Unfortunately, they told us that this stage our ability to provide consular services is extremely limited due to the situation on the ground, and then they say away from that which they were allowed. You know, they were happy for me to quote. They told me that you need a border crossing code and a visa across from Iran to Azerbaijan.
My listener, who I again will not identify and whose mum is trying to get out of Iran, is back on the line. Very worrying times. We're thinking about you and your mum in particular. We've been in touch with defact. I know my producers told you what they had to say, and I hope that you've had the chance to talk to them and had some better news. Please tell me you have, could.
There's still nothing. She's been at the border for the past almost forty eight hours now and watching internationals of the UK going through within two hours with their codes, and Australia cannot produce any We've got about sixteen hundred Australian citizens in Iran, and I mean she hasn't seen any other citizens get to the border yet, so they would have the same problem. We need this authorization code. Without it, she cannot leave. She's now out of her
heart medication. She's got a heart condition and there's nowhere to actually get the medication. So it's becoming really critical for her to get some kind of medical help to get medication, and there's not much on the other side of the border. So they've fad it, telling me as soon as she gets across. You know, we've got medicines, we've got chemists all over and they're her what she needs. But how does she get across? How do Australians get across?
Yeah, you know, I think when we spoke yesterday the communication was difficult against it comes down to internet access. I mean, that's the world we live in these days. But have you been able to talk to youmum much.
It's on and off very short period and it only happens when she gets very close to the border, So I don't know how far away she has to go. But when she gets within a few meters of the actual border cross things, she'll have a bit of Internet and she sends through you know, comments or where she's at. So I leave messages, but I don't know if she's getting them.
Do you know exactly where she is?
Yes, it's a place called don't.
Tell don't tell me, don't tell me. I'm trying. I'm only saying that because I don't want anything you and I talk about to make matters worse, which is why, as much as I love the fact we're talking, I don't want to identify you. So let me ask you this. Then, have you spoken directly to anyone from Foreign Affairs and Trade?
Yes?
Are they able to give you any glimmer of hope that would help us know?
No, they're basically saying we're doing all we can. There's a crisis line is twenty four hours, which is wonderful, but when you're call, they just say we can't there's nothing we can do. I speak and certain for managers and they've called me yesterday as well as the last contact they made, and they said we're trying to get this authorization that we're having difficulty they've got.
To produce a code and a visa. That can't be Look, I'm not involved. That can't be that hard, surely, can it.
You would think so an Australian citizen would hope to get a visa, right, it can't be that hard. But even the visa, they don't want to divorder. They're saying, we will let you cross just with a code. So I say email or give a verbal code. They will let them across and then once there they can apply for a VIZA. And she's got her Australian passport there, so you think, okay, just give me the code and I can cross to safety. So the airspace is obviously closed.
We're not asking for flights, we're not asking for, you know, anything miraculous, just a coach to get across the border so she can come home to safety, you know.
And she was doing some work in hospitals and.
She's been a nurse and midwife in Australian in Sydney hospitals for the past forty years, the last fifteen years which she's an educator with several universities and she does facilitations, so she teaches nurses in hospitals. She does volunteer work. We both do their several hospitals, and you know, I remember all the stuff we've done over the years. Now now she needs help, you know, seventy year old woman alone. I don't know why the government can't help. She's all her life has been a life.
Yeah, okay, I won't put you through any more of this because it look again, I cannot imagine what you're going through. Lots of love to you and anything we can do. And I just I just make this plea And I know I know you're listening. The department involved here. You know my listener should not be bringing your helpline.
You should know her number off by heart. And here's here's a seventy year old Australian who seems to me was doing some work around health and volunteering and who wants to come home and needs medication and can't get a bloody code. And we sent a playing load of military people to help get Australians out of here. I mean, what am I missing? I don't want to be unkind
because I can only imagine how difficult this is. But if my listener from a capital city in Australia can talk to her mum and she knows where she is, then it wouldn't be hard for you to know where she is and generate a code or something. I mean, you shake your head, don't you. Anyway, it's not about us. It's about my listener and her mum. And we'll keep across it as best we can. And you know, the department came back yesterday and a typical poly speak wishy
washy say nothing but hopefully keep them quiet statement. And I reckon that we're all a bit smarter than you give us credit for. And you might just want to get up and off your rample and do something. It's eighteen to midday now, it's coming up to a court. It a midday. US President Donald Trump is set to speak at midday, and if you've just joined us, we're providing you with rolling coverage on the attack by the
United States on three nuclear sites in Iran. President Donald Trump announced the attack at ten to ten, so about two hours ago, and since then we've been waiting for him to speak. That's about ten minutes away from now, and of course it's almost dawn in Israel, and Israel's top leadership has been silent so far in these US attacks in April. Important to not Prime Minister Benjamin Thatt in Yahoo after US to use its bunker buster bombs to destroy the underground nuclear site at fod Oh. But
there's been no public statement yet. We understand that he will. That is Benjamin that in Yahoo. We'll speak after we hear from Donald Trump, which I think is around fifteen minutes to be fairteen minutes away from now now. Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the US House, has made this statement, saying the military operations in Iran should serve as a clearer martyr to our adversaries and allies that President Trump
means what he says. The President gave Iran's leader every opportunity to make a deal, but Iran refused to commit to a nuclear disarmament agreement. President Trump has been consistent and clear that a nuclear armed Iran will not be tolerated. That posture, he says, has now been enforced with strength, precision, and clarity. The President's decisive action prevents the world's largest state sponsor of terrorism, which chants death to America, from
obtaining the most lethal weapon on the planet. This is america first policy in action, he says, God bless our brave men and women in uniform, the most lethal fighting force on the planet, as we pray for their safe return home. And he finishes with May God bless America. Now, I shared with you a statement yesterday, and we've got a translator here via Fox News so that we can understand what has been said. This is the Iranian foreign minister speaking yesterday. Have a listen.
Yeah, so no prospect of talkies you if you take those people of their words. So I don't know what that means. Trump thought he should act today. Of course, in the background of all of this, we should not forget that it was only yesterday. I'm being told that nat and Yahoo is now posting on x Can we just grab that and I'll share that with you in just a moment or two. Trump did say it a little while back, Well it'll be a fortnight. Aram's got
a fortnight. Well, had a couple of days. And then earlier this morning when we got to work, there was the suggestion that the B two's that carry these bunker bombs were headed to Guam. And it wasn't long after that that, in fact, they dropped their payload at ford Oh unfortunate named FODOH, the largest or most significant of the three plants, nuclear plants. As I mentioned earlier, plenty of people saying on the feedback that this is the
beginning of WW three, even hate saying that. Bill Mitchell, a commentator from America, says this is actually the prevention of World War three. People will have all sorts of views about that this won't start World War three, says this will prevent it. Finally, Trump showed Iran there's no path for them to a nuclear weapon. Obviously, opinions around all of this are very passionate and all over the shop. Just some feedback from distance, thank you zero for six
zero eight seven three eight seven three. The poor Lady's mum Luke stuck in Iran is suffering because we suffer from incompetence as more paper shufflers are employed to reduce unemployment. A sad story for this poor lady and her mum. Sad for Australia having such an incompetent government. Thank you, Jay, appreciate that, Luke. You understand the daughter's grief is wanting her mum to be safety out of a run. But when are people going to make take responsibility for their
actions and choices made. There have been clear warnings from the government to leave that volatile area for some time, people don't listen. Well, I think that lady in her seventies has been trying to leave and she was following the government's instructions. They appear apparently didn't get her anywhere. One three, one eight seven three Back in a sec Now we understand Donald Trump has described the strikes as
very successful, yet he has not spoken publicly. That'll happen in about six minutes and we'll bring you that live in the meantime. As it turns out, Benjamin that Yahoo has just posted comments to social media on x Here's what he had to say.
Congratulations President Trump, your bold decision to target Eron's nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history. In Operation Rising Line and Israel has done truly amazing things. But in Tonight's action against Iran's nuclear facilities, America has been truly unsurpassed. It is done what no other country on Earth could do. History will record that President Trump acted to deny the world's
most dangerous regime the world's most dangerous weapons. His leadership today has created a pivot of history that can help lead the Middle East and beyond to a future of prosperity and peace. President Trump and I often say peace through strength. First comes strength, then comes peace. And tonight President Trump and the United States acted with a lot of strength. President Trump, I thank you the people of Israel, Thank you the forces of civilization.
Thank you.
God bless America. God, God bless his will. And where God bless our unshakable alliance are unbreakable faith.
That's Benjamin nettan Yahoo posting that just minutes ago. Meanwhile, back in America, the Democrat House Leader Hakeem Jeffries says President Trump misled the country about his intentions, failed to seek congressional authorization for the use of military force and risks American entanglement in a potentially disastrous war in the
Middle East. He called for an immediate classified congressional briefing and said the president quote shoulders complete and total responsibility for any adverse consequences that flow from his unilateral military action. It's for to midday. We do have news at midday. If Donald Trump begins his address, we'll interrupt and bring that to you live. All right, we'll leave our news. There are Donald Trump, the US President, making his way
to the microphone, speaking of the world. Following those attacks on nucleosites in Iran.
Time ago, the US military carried out massive precision strikes on the three key nuclear facilities in the Iranian regime for dou Natance and Esfahan. Everybody heard those names for years as they built this horribly destructive enterprise. Our objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of terror.
Tonight, I can report to the world.
That the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran's key nuclear and Richmond facilities have been completely and totally obliterated. Iran, the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks would be far greater and a lot easier. For forty years, Iran has been saying death to America, death to Israel. They have been killing our people, blowing off their arms, blowing off their
legs with roadside bombs, that was their specialty. We lost over a thousand people, and hundreds of thousands throughout the Middle East and around the world have died as a direct result of their hate. In particular, so many were killed by their general Cassem Solomoni. I decided a long time ago that I would not let this happen.
It will not continue.
I want to thank and congratulate Prime Minister BB Netanyahu. We worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before, and we've gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel.
I want to thank the Israeli military for.
The wonderful job they've done, and most importantly, I want to congratulate the great American patriots who flew those magnificent machines tonight and all of the United States military on an operation the likes of which the world.
Has not seen in many, many decades.
Hopefully we will no longer need their services and this capacity.
I hope that's so.
I also want to congratulate the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Dan Raisin Kane, spectacular general, and all of the brilliant military minds involved in this attack.
With all of that being said, this cannot continue.
There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran, far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days. Remember, there are many targets left. The Knights was the most difficult of them all by far, and perhaps the most lethal. But if peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed and skill. Most of them can be taken out in a matter of minutes. There's no military in the world that could have done what we did tonight, not
even close. There has never been a military that could do what took place just a little while ago. Tomorrow, General Kin, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, we'll have a press conference at eight am at the Pentagon, and I want to just thank everybody, and in particular God, I want to just say we love you God, and we love our great military.
Protect them.
God bless the Middle East, God bless Israel, and God bless America.
Thank you very much, Thank you.
That's Donald Trump at the White House addressing the world following the United States decision at around ten minutes to ten our time to announce the three nuclear facilities nuclear facilities in Iran had been bombed. Now, there's a lot of information contained in that statement. I'll reply that before we leave you today. Trump says, amongst other things, that no military in the world could have done what they
did tonight. He says that without peace, there'll be tragedy for Iran, and that will far exceed what's already taken place. Trump is or has made the argument that Iran didn't just pose a threat to Israel, but also to the United States, saying that for forty years, Iran's been saying death to America, death to Israel. After months of hesitancy, President Trumps embraced Prime Minister Benjamin dtan Yahoo, saying they've
worked closely together as a team. He also said a long time ago he decided he would not let this continue. Iranian efforts to gain a nuclear weapon, a point on which He's been consistent, they say for over a decade. He referred to as Iran as the bully of the Middle East. He says his objective was the destruction of Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and to stop the nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of terror.
B two bombers dropped at least six thirty thousand pound bunker busters on four Doh for Dow I've heard it now called as well or four Doh, and submarines fired thirty TLAM cruise missiles at Natanz and Isfahan. According to a US official who kept has been kept anonymous, Crump says our objective was destruction of Iran's nuclear capacity. He says the operation was a spectacular success. He claims that
Iran's nuclear sites are totally obliterated. He was flanked when he spoke to the world Vice President Advance Jade Vance, Secretary of Saint Marco Rubio, and Defense Secretary Pete Hegsath. He walked down the cost all of the White House to deliver his remarks, looking straight at a camera and didn't miss a beat. From what I heard, Donald Trump addressing the world, I'm sorry for interrupting our news for
those that were expecting a full bulletin. But we've just think given the significance of all of this and what you expect from us in relation to rolling coverage, that that was what we had to do. And now I shared with you before Donald Trump spoke Benjamin nettan Yahoo, the Israeli leader who posted on social media and address again to the world, here's what President that in Yahoo had to sight.
Congratulations, President Trump. Your bold decision to target Iran's nuclear facilities with the awesome and righteous might of the United States will change history. In Operation Rising Line, Israel has done truly amazing things, but into Night's action against Iran's nuclear facilities, America has been truly unsurpassed. It is done what no other country on Earth could do. History will record that President Trump acted to deny the world's most
dangerous regime the world's most dangerous weapons. His leadership to day has created a pivot of history that can help lead the Middle East and beyond to a future of prosperity and peace. President Trump and I often say peace through strength. First comes strength, then comes peace. And tonight President Trump and the United States acted with a lot of strength, President Trump. I thank you the people of Israel, Thank you the forces of civilization. Thank you, God bless America.
God bless is Will. And may God bless our unshakable alliance are unbreakable faith.
Yes, a most significant day in world history following the bombing of three nuclear facilities by the US. Now, just some feedback from listeners we've brought to all the international news. I'm keen to know what you think, Luke. I think that was a spine tingling address by Trump at goose Bumps, finally addressing the world's issues. Thank you, Rob for getting in touch, Luke. I wonder how many of those in America who'll be out in force protesting this. Remember the
fateful day of twin Towers. Sharon. Thank you for your note. I'm waiting to hear the cringing, obfuscating elbows to Trump's speech. Okay, will he support him?
Well?
I guess we'll no soon enough. Thank you for getting in touch, Jessica, says a leader. Amen. Alan, on the other hand, says w t F. A totally godless man praising God. That'll do me. Thank you Allan for getting in touch. Another listener, Ray, good, Luke, I can just imagine our Prime Minister's response amongst the arms rs and ours. Okay, Ray listing in Brisbane, thank you for getting in touch. And in fact a lot of people are saying exactly that. Woo's kind to move on. Check you watch Luke, it's
past midday? Okay? Did I give the wrong time? Maybe I did, Luke Haran pressy was President Trump? Susie, thank you for getting in touch. All right, so much there? Tell you what we'll do. We might just catch our breath here a moment, take a break, come back with more of our role and coverage as the US strikes nuclear facilities in Iran. This is weekends onto GB and four BC sixteen after mid date. Is as we provide rolling coverage of the US striking Iran's nuclear facilities earlier
in the day. Just looking for some Australian reaction. So far, the only one I can see I've noticed Senator David Shuebridge. He is the brother of Michael Schubridge with whom we spoke an hour ago. So this is the Greens reaction, he says. President Donald Trump's claim today to have bombed Iran directly is such a fundamental threat to Old Peace that the Albanezy government must immediately take steps to distance
Australia from these attacks and condemn them. There'll be a pro peace rally in Newcastle following his media conference, which happens in around an hour's time here. They should pull a crowd that that's not I spoke to my colleague Lauren to Marti from nine News around an hour and a bit ago to see what the reaction was the immediate reaction in the United States now that the president has spoken, I thought we'd get Lauren back on the line for any further update and Lauren say thank you
again for having at chat to me. I've noted that a couple of Democrats have really spoken out against Donald Trump, saying that he should have sought permission to do what he's authorized earlier in the day. I don't think anyone would be surprised to know that Alexandria Occasio Cortez has come out and said these are grounds for impeachment. I I've seen those comments, but a very lively political environment in the US right now, it.
Certainly is looking a lot of people in Congress, mostly Democratic members, are saying why weren't they alerted to these strikes we have, of course, just heard from Donald Trump. That was a pretty short speech for the US president.
It only ran around seven minutes there. As you heard, I wanted to talk a little bit more about that because one of the key takeaways I think really we got there was Donald Trump not he left the door open to any further attack, saying that peace doesn't come quickly, we will go after those other targets, those seeing the other nuclear targets within the country.
Yeah, that is remarkable. Benjamin Att and Yahoo and Donald Trump. I don't know that they've been necessarily all that close, but if you heard, I'm sure you did what BB had to say, and Donald Trump's reference to him and the people of Israel, it's hard not to believe that this has been.
Either.
I don't know if it's been implemented in a joint fashion, but they've been well aware of what was in the on the road ahead clearly.
Yeah.
And Benjamin Netna, who was one of the very first phone calls that Donald Trump made after these strikes were carried out, and then those public remarks coming from the Israeli president prime minister where he said America is truly unsurpassed it's done what no other country on Earth could do. But as you and I were talking about earlier, this is something that Israel has been pushing for for some time, and certainly it was a defiant tone taken by bb Netta who tonight.
It was amazing to me, Lauren, perhaps not so much to you that we were watching all the coverage, and in particular Fox News, and I saw Sean Hannity pop up on the screen and he actually admitted to having spoken to Donald Trump just before going on air, and he let loose with the there were six bombs dropped on this four Doaux area and various other things, saying that you know that plant had been wiped out, the
spreading of news in America. So Trump goes on truth social and says, by the way, we've bombed the nuclear plants, and he has a phone called a Sean Hannity. I mean, I don't know, doesn't happen here?
Remarkable, It truly is, And it's a very different administration here in the US with Donald Trump as the commander in chief. That we learn about these military strikes engaged by the US military over social media is quite an astonishing thing in itself, but Donald Trump picked up the phone to a number of US journalists in the moments after that, talking about what kind of weapons were used for that US attack and a little bit of you
know what will come next. But I think that seven minute speech there from the US President, which was interesting in itself because he had the vice president standing behind him in the Secretary of State, Defense Secretary. He wasn't certainly alone, as Donald Trump quite frequently likes to be when he is fronting the cameras, you know, standing there making quite a show of what has just happened.
Yeah, yeah, he didn't miss didn't miss a beat. I guess we all now wait to see what happens next. It's one thing for Donald Trump to say, right now it's time for peace. It's another what kind of internal pressures will exist in Iran forcing them to do something. They're going to do something, aren't they.
Well, certainly the reporting here is that US officials in the Trump administration believe the next forty eight hours is going to be really key as to what comes next. And you know, as I said that, Donald Trump leaving the door open to potential strikes if Iran does hit back in whatever way, shape or form. That may be, so there is certainly a lot of uncertainty. Donald Trump hasn't indicated exactly what is to come next. But we will hear from the Chief of the Pentagon Pete Hegseth,
tomorrow morning. It is now ten twenty pm here at night, so a bit of a ways to go before we hear from the Defense Secretary there as to what is the next move for the US military.
All right, you've been up long enough. Good to talk to you again. Stay safe, Hey, thanks Luke, Good on you. Lauren Tomarty look for her reports on nine News. She'll have the very latest from the United States of America. I'm just looking for because I've had a lot of people ask the question, is there any reaction from Australian politicians. Well,
I mentioned David Shubridge. We are looking for statements. We normally get them sent to us, and we've invited a number of political leaders onto the program, but we've had no success. They're probably wondering, I wonder what the focus group would say, maybe others suggesting the others practicing how to speak, which is terribly unkind quite a number of people saying the world is now safer place. Well done, and the same number, perhaps slightly less, saying what have
you done? It's now going to be WW three when no one wants, no one wants to even admit that that's the thing. But that's something the Time will obviously inform us more about. In the meantime. The text is zero four six zero eight seven three eight seven three, And we've had hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of messages. I will read them all, perhaps not all on air,
and I thank you for all of them. Mal makes this point good, I Luke, in the interest of social cohesion and mental health about diggers, can we send the protesters to perhaps the South Pole until they wake up to themselves. Well, now I'm hearing you. I know what you're saying. How much supporters in Hyde Park, Southwest Sydney will be most upset by the attack on Iran Iran says another listener, brad Well. I guess time will tell.
We do know there is a predictable reaction from those within the body politic, and I guess we wait for that. What would these bed wedding lefties say a country like Canada or Australia, or the UK or even the US enacted a murderous regime as a have an Iran or their own people, what would they do? Thank you, Jeff. And that leaves aside, you know, the idea that you might want to be a perhaps female, and be educated and perhaps wear what you want, perhaps have the same
freedoms of people of the other gender. You know, very good point. Thanks for making it good A two GB listening to you on we had a blackout during the Trump speech. Can you replay this speech? Yes, Jodie, I will be replaying the speech. It shouldn't have happened. I don't know how it happened, but we will certainly be replaying that, and we'll be doing that probably after our next break. The words of Donald Trump following that attack you its attack on the nuclear facilities in Iran, so
you'll hear that very shortly. One three one eight seventy three is our open line number. Obviously, with this breaking world news, we've changed things around here a little. So what I wanted to do now is just give you a reminder of whoever we are on this Sunday afternoon at twenty five after midday. Jim would normally be here,
but we've devoted this program to the rolling coverage. It follows earlier today, and this came from Donald Trump posting on truth Social his own social media platform, saying, at ten minutes to ten o'clock, we have completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran, including for DOE, Natans and Esafhan. All planes are now outside of Iran airspace. A full payload of bombs were dropped on the primary site for DOE. All planes are safely
on their way home. He says, congratulations to our great American warriors. There is not another military in the world that could have done this. Now is the time for peace, and then he thanks us all for our attention to this matter that came. As I say, at ten minutes to ten, we will come back with the words of Donald Trump delivered at the White House about half an hour ago. For those that missed it, also Benjamin Nett and Yahoo. The Israeli leader has had a thing or
two to say. And then we might be deep enough into things to have a chat with the Continuous Call team, because after one o'clock today we can get back to life as normal, can't we With a bit of food, but don't worry. Right throughout the afternoon, tonight, the week ahead, all the time. If news breaks, you'll hear it first, and you'll hear it completely. Right here twenty seven after midday, now twenty nine minutes to one o'clock. I note that now the prediction is a global oil prices. Don't you
love this? Likely to see a spike? Trading resumes at six pm Eastern in the US. An Asia crude oil analyst Global Commodities and Shipping Firm has said, but long term traders will be looking to see if fighting effects around all export capacity or on tanker traffic in and
out of the Persian Gulf. I guess we shouldn't be surprised to hear that the NASA Fire Information System detected a significant heat generating event near the four DAU Nuclear and Richmond facility, with one detection about thirty minutes before President Trump announced the US strikes. Often, areas that are bombed or produced significant heat, such as from lasting fires, are detected. Other events like wildfires and industrial activity can
also be picked up. However, no recent events were detected In the last month. Around four DOH the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran issued a state and confirming Iran's three nuclear sites quote were attacked in a violent act against international laws, including the Non Proliferation Treaty by the enemies of Islamic Iran unquote. The agency said it would take legal action against the US in international courts and that
Iran's nuclear program would continue. A US official said that six B two bombers dropped a dozen thirty thousand pound bunker buster bombs on the four dou nuclear site. It lies deep underground. Navy submarines fired thirty TLAM crew missiles that the Natans and Isafahan sites. Easy for you to say, one B two also dropped two bunker busters on the Tans, according to the official, some of the details there.
Now.
There's been a reaction from the Green Senator David Schubridge, who, to be fair, I think is the Greens spokesperson on these matters. He said, Trump's claimed today to have bombed around directly as such a fundamental threat to world peace that the Albanese government must immediately take steps to distance Australia from these attacks and condemn them. Which is interesting because the constant calls from the Iranians for death to Israel and two Americans must obviously be the opposite, which
many of us would go, huh, so that's that. Former Prime Minister Scott Morrison's been on Sky News has.
Had this to say, Well, the entry of the United States directly into this in an offensive capacity with the strikes that we've seen today, is obviously a very significant change in what we've seen in the conflicts so far. The President Trump clearly had no further options available to him other than to do what only the US military
could do. It wasn't like Israel could have undertaken what we've just seen, and it is certainly not something I think the President has rushed towards or even preferred, But he's been resolute about the need to resolve this issue, and clearly that was only going to occur with what we've seen today. Now with that action, I think it
is still contained. It was very direct in where they struck and the message he has sent clearly to the regime is the ball is very much in their court and it's time to end this and to move towards a peace. Well, they were the only one who could take out the enrichment facilities of Iraq that could not have been done by Israel. That was not possible, and
as a result in the window that was available. It was for the United States to take that opportunity or see one of the most authoritarian, repressive Brasileins in the world continue to move towards having the ability to literally incinerate.
An entire nation. All right, former Prime Minister Scott Morrison. And again for those it didn't hear it. A little earlier in the day, about thirty five minutes ago, we heard from the US President Donald Trump. It was speaking at the White House.
A short time ago, the US military carried out massive precision strikes on the three key nuclear facilities in the Iranian regime for Doah, Natans and a Sfahan. Everybody heard those names for years as they built this horribly destructive enterprise. Our objective was the destruction of irans nuclear and richment capacity and a stop to the nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of terror.
Tonight I can report to the world.
That the strikes were a spectacular military success. Iran's key nuclear and Richmond facilities have been completely and totally obliterated. Rand the bully of the Middle East, must now make peace. If they do not, future attacks would be far.
Greater and a lot easier.
For forty years, Iran has been saying death to.
America, death to Israel.
They have been killing our people, blowing off their arms, blowing off their legs with roadside bombs, that was their specialty. We lost over a thousand people, and hundreds of thousands throughout the Middle East and around the world have died as a direct result of their hate. In particular, so many were killed by their General Cassem SOLMANI. I decided a long time ago that I would not let this happen. It will not continue. I want to thank and congratulate
Prime Minister bb Netan Yahoo. We worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before, and we've gone a long way to erasing this horrible threat to Israel. I want to thank the Israeli military for the wonderful job they've done, and most importantly, I want to congratulate the great American patriots who flew those magnificent machines tonight and all of the United States military on an operation the likes of which the world has.
Not seen in many, many decades.
There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for a ran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days. Remember, there are many targets left. The Nights was the most difficult of them all by far,
and perhaps the most lethal. But if peace does not come quickly, we will go after those other targets with precision, speed and skill. Most of them can be taken out in a matter of minutes. There's no military in the world that could have done what we did tonight, not even close. There has never been a military that could do what took place just a little while ago. Tomorrow, General Kin, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth will have a press conference at eight am.
At the Pentagon.
And I want to just thank everybody, and in particular God, I want to just say, we love you God, and we love our great military. Protect them. God bless the Middle East, God bless Israel, and God bless America.
Thank you very much.
Thank you there. He is US President Donald Trump. Speaking at the White House about forty minutes ago. He said the objectives to destroy Iran's nuclear enrichment capacity and stop the quite nuclear threat posed by the world's number one state sponsor of Terra, and that mission had been accomplished. Trump said in the strikes he described as a spectacular military success, Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities have been completely
and totally obliterated. Trump said, in what could mark the end of Trump's isolationalism and core Maga principles, Trump threatened more strikes on Iran if the country did not make peace, saying if they do not, future attacks will be far greater and a lot easier. Trump said that there were many targets left and characterized these attacks as the most difficult, that is the ones completed earlier. Today, Trump personally thanked Israel Prime Minister Benjamin nettan Yahoo and signal to renewed
closeness and strength to the relationship. He says, we worked as a team like perhaps no team has ever worked before. Dave Sharma is the former Oskogian ambassador to Israel. It was on Sky News moments ago.
And said this I think I think that's right, and I think it's essential that Australia supports what the United States has done overnight. This will dramatically set back Iran's nuclear program, which has been a concern not just for Israel, not just for countries in the Middle East, but for the entire global community. It's a concern that diplomacy, patient and painstaking diplomacy over many years, has failed to address.
And if the US administration, out of Donald Trump, has been prepared to take military steps to address this, I think it's clear. As an ally and as someone who opposes new clear proliferation efforts, Australia should be giving our full throat of support to that.
Dave Sharma a text from a listener. These are options, and there are options rather and they're called negotiations. We cannot risk a possible WW three because someone decided to bombard another country because they might have a bigger bomb. This is ridiculous. I have to say comments like that are in the significant minority from comments from other listeners who are asking the question, where is our Prime minister and his support for this probably being focus group shopped
right now. But for those that need perhaps an understanding of how it came to this. It was only I think yesterday that the Iranian Foreign Minister made it I think abundantly clear, and this has been translated, i think by Fox News in the US abundantly clear that negotiations weren't thing.
Have a listen, we are not seeking negotiations. It is the Americans who want talks. They've sent messages several times, very serious ones, but we made it explicitly clear to them that as long as this aggression and invasion continues, there's absolutely no room for talk or just pomacy. We are engaged in legitimate self defense and this defense will not stop under any circumstances. We have nothing to discuss with the United States, which is a partner in these crimes.
Yeah, I think, I think negotiations weren't going to be a thing. Don't you hearing that?
There? You are?
Well, that's the very lightest As I mentioned earlier. Don't worry. We will continue our kabativ around yous, and if something of significant sprikes, you'll hear about it. The boys on the Continuous Call Team no for guide today is say no. So we can see the boys on the Continuous Call Team can break in we might have our Middle Eastern policy expert, the big Man, across all the details of this,
no doubt. So yeah, quite seriously, we'll have all that covered for you through the remains of the day and as we get back to our weekday lineup tomorrow, starting with Ben. Of course, I think Mike's on open. I didn't Mike Jefferies. I think Mike might be on air when they have the Pentagon press conference, he said ten hours. Maybe it's maybe it's Bill. Anyway, whenever it's on and whoever is on, you will have it directly on two GB and four BC. Yes, this is me wrapping up
the role and courage. Hopefully we've given you all the information that you needed to know. And can I just thank my friend and colleague from four BC, Shiv for getting in touch and I hope listeners everywhere have been able to follow this story as it's made its way
into the New Side. Michel starting with a social media post from Donald Trump that happened this morning at ten minutes to ten o'clock on Truth Social, the Trump'ster's own social media platform, where he said where he said, we've completed our very successful attack on the three nuclear sites in Iran, including for Doe, the Tans and Esfahan. All planes are now outside of Iran airspace. Full payload of bombs was dropped on the primary site for Doe or
planes safety on their way home. Congrats to our great American warriors. There's not another military in the world that could have done this. Now is the time for peace, and he thanks the world for their attention. The key point being Donald Trump saying this is a time for peace. That would require the targets of that attack to say, yeah, fair enough, And I think given all the statements referred from them, there's the Niles and other such things, that's
unlikely to be the case. So our attention is drawn to what happens next, and who knows when that will be. But as I said, we will be right across that the minute it happens. We'll let you know whatever programs on air. So it's coming up to a quarter to one here on weekends with Luke Grant. The text is zero four six zero eight seven three eight seven three. The emails two GB dot com before we see dot com dot you. I think I've been speaking for a long time, so let me just pause briefly will we
do the quiz today? No, we're not doing the quiz today. No, you're not getting a pillow out of me. Damn it. Let's give away a pillow. We've got to at some point in the show. Smile. We'll do that and I'll find the boys at the footy too. All after this at fourteen to one. Now, despite the extraordinary awning we've had together, we do intend because I'm having a holiday
after this for a couple of weeks. And I said, when I got to work today, I said, didn't I Nelson, my executive producer, I said, I don't care if the US bomb a run today, We're doing the quiz. I said that, And like an hour later, Hello, Donald Trump says what I told you. He says, So spinal E's pillow suffering from headaches, saw neck or storing. The solution could be the world's best premium supportive pillow, the spinal Ees pillow water. Now it's spinal Ease at e dot

Darryl did the Chucks ever enticey with a contract.
Well there's another issue, of course, not.
Fair enough. Gosh, of course you got one of the great Roosters or former roosters on with Piggy Riddell in the team today, MG probably wishes he did play for the Roosters, and he would have looked, would have.

Okay, Well, I can't just give it to you. We never do that on this quiz. Here's question one. The Greens spokesperson on defense is a David shoe Bridge or David T. Shirt Bridge.

Now we've got a statement from a government spokesperson courtesy
of our mates in the nine television news room. They say, we've been clear that Araund's nuclear and ballistic missile program has been a threat to international peace and security. We note the US President's statement saying now it's the time for peace. The security situation is highly volatile. We continue to call for de escalation, dialogue and diplomacy. Great, that's from the federal government. All right, time to go. Look, I have to thank my team. They've been brilliant. Well
they're always brilliant. But Nelson Scott, my executive producer, Leslie the Possum Thompson who's helped out today.
