Hello, and welcome to the forty nine Ers First and ten podcast, ten minutes of the most up to date forty nine Ers news first thing in the morning. I'm your host, Brianna McDonald, and I'm joined by forty nine Ers team reporter Lindsay Polaris, and we are just about to enter a Friday practice of training camp. Lindsay, you were able to catch up with general manager John Lynch yesterday for the forty nine Ers Live look in. What does he think of the team's practices so far.

Speaker 2

Yeah, I think overall very impressed, and obviously there was a little bit of an emphasis on the quarterback room, which has had lots of changes.

Speaker 3

In the last week.

Speaker 2

It feels like it's been a month, but it's actually only been a little over a week of training camp practices.

But I think the biggest takeaway is that Brock is not only kicking the rust off, but coming back and also making that second year jump that you know players you hope that your players have from their rookie year to their sophomore season, and we're seeing him come along and then again just re emphasizing also the growth in Trey Lance and what a good fit Sam Darnold is just for the team in general.

Speaker 3

He's seeing what we're seeing.

Speaker 2

He's impressed with the progress that's been made in such little time and plenty more to come.

Speaker 1

Speaking of that quarterback rotation, is it still set to schedule with Brock Party two days on, one day off. What's it looking like for the next few practices.

Speaker 2

Yes, so no certainty on what it's going to look

like moving forward. But one thing to note from day seven is that there was a shakeup and it's pretty significant because originally Brock Party started his training camp throwing schedule two days on back to back throwing days followed by two days off, and yesterday we finally saw him go two days on one day of rest, which was the same rest day that the rest of the team enjoyed, and he was back in pads practicing and it actually looked like same amount of reps.

Speaker 3

There was no pitch count that we saw.

Speaker 2

And then also a significant change was that quarterback Brandon Allen, who is typically coming in as the fourth QB, actually did not take any team drills yesterday. Head coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that just on a shorter practice day like yesterday, there just weren't enough quarterback reps to go around, and that's kind of been a subject of conversation this entire training camp is making sure that everybody gets to touch the ball.

Speaker 1

Yeah, well, yesterday there were quite a few rotations within position groups with it being a veteran rest day, but there was also a couple of injury updates. Can you bring us up to speed on what the latest updates are from head coach Ka Shanahan.

Speaker 2

Yeah, so it's actually four injury updates that we got. Offensive lineman Aaron Banks is actually in concussion protocol. Running back Elijah Mitchell suffered an abductor strain. Offensive lineman John Feliciano has what.

Speaker 3

We believe to be a shoulder strain.

Speaker 2

He's day to day but actually expected to be in practice later today, so nothing too serious. And offensive tackle Jalen Moore actually has a bone bruise, which is actually really good news because we saw him hit the ground and it's a little uncertain what was going on at first on Thursday, but we were able to see him yesterday. He wasn't participating in practice, but walking around in his practice gear, So just a positive sign step in the right direction for him.

Speaker 1

What did coach Shanahan have to say about keeping up the intensity at practice but making sure players don't hit the.

Speaker 3

Ground like that.

Speaker 2

Yeah, it's a delicate balance, right. You want to encourage players to bring everything they have to the practice field. At the end of the day, these are your guys and you're going up against each other, and you need to do that with I guess some tempered restraint because you have to keep everybody healthy in order to have

a successful season. And it's walking a fine line. And Kyle Shanahan said something to the effect that in his younger coaching years he was more about just let the guys play, but as he's come into you know, decades of coaching, at this point, he realizes, Yeah, no, we need to be really careful about all of our players because everybody plays such a critical role to the team's success.

Speaker 1

It's about smart football at training camp these.

Speaker 3

Days football exactly well.

Speaker 1

Starting at the offensive line, with the combination of a rest day for Trent Williams and also an injury to John Fliciano, we saw Leroy Watson enter the mix for the O line. What did you see from him?

Speaker 2

Yeah, offensive lineman Leroy Watson is very much just climbing up the ranks. I think his story is pretty impressive because he's actually a converted tight end and we just see him come into training camp this year and he's definitely it looks like he's put on muscle.

Speaker 3

He very much looks like he fits the part.

Speaker 2

And again, yes, because Trent Williams was taking that veteran rest day, he actually got to run with the ones yesterday and was doing a really good job. So again it's just a learning process for him, but the coaches are watching him come to his come into his own and it's looking really good.

Speaker 1

And as we take a look at the forty nine ers backfield, Elijah Mitchell, it's really unfortunate here he's out with an injury again, but that leaves room for the younger running backs to come and step in. And Christian McCaffrey, he did have a veteran rest day yesterday. But something interesting I noticed is that Kyle Yuschik said that his discipline rubs off on the pretty much entire offensive group, especially the running backs.

Speaker 4

Yeah, Christian's always locked in. He's been a phenomenal example for all the rbs in our room. You know, to see a professional like him and a guy you know, arguably in my opinion, the best running back in the league and works as hard as he does. You know, he doesn't just you know, he's been doing this for a while now, this is in his first year being one of the best players in the NFL, and so he doesn't just rest on his morals, know that he's

you know, in a good spot. The guy works his freaking hailof and all those guys see And I think maybe that's why you've seen some of the improvement from these younger guys.

Speaker 1

How have the younger running backs learned from Christian McCaffrey and how have you seen that discipline play out and practice?

Speaker 3

Yeah, I think pretty much.

Speaker 2

Christian McCaffrey is the gold standard for running backs right.

Speaker 3

He is a dual.

Speaker 2

Threat, and in general, I think, like Kyle Yuschek mentioned, it's more about his just discipline in the way he trains both mentally and physically. There is no let up in any area of his life. And when you have somebody like that as the veteran of your running back room, it really helps everybody else get up to speed. And again, Elijah Mitchell played a really big role his rookie year, so.

Speaker 3

Kind of had a quick development as well.

Speaker 2

So I feel like you've got two really good anchors in the room. And you've seen ty Davis Price take tremendous strides, and you saw JP Mason, who was an undrafted rookie last year, really kind of come into his own towards the end of the year and he's just continued to build. And that's I think in large part because they have a good example of where they'd like to get you in their careers. And I think if you've got Christian McCaffrey leading the way, you will not be let as straight.

Speaker 1

Yeah, definitely. And for those running backs to get out there a practice and get honestly any rushing yards against the forty nine ers number one overall ranked defense, that's pretty impressive. And he heard from cornerback Isaiah Oliver the other day that Fred Warner and Drake Greenlaw, those linebackers set the tone for the defense. What exactly is that tone?

Speaker 2

Yeah, I mean that tone is physical, That tone is forceful, dominating.

Speaker 3

I could, you know, give you a list of words of what the forty nine ers defense is.

Speaker 2

But it was great actually to talk to Isaiah Oliver because he said this is one of the more physical training camps that he's been a part of. It's a little bit different than the experience he had at the Atlanta Falcons, and it is because of how Fred Warner and Drake Greenlaw run the defense, and like you said,

they set the tone. And he actually mentioned that it's when they get a big hit or a big tackle early on, and he said that that's when you know what type of day it's gonna be with the forty nine ers defense.

Speaker 3

So it's good to know that that kind of sets the tone for everybody else.

Speaker 2

Everyone else falls in line with like we're gonna play physical, we're gonna play intense, but also, like we said earlier, we're going to be safe about it and you know, be moderate in in our training camp practices.

Speaker 1

Absolutely, And speaking of that linebacker group, how are the younger linebackers coming up within the defense? We saw de Winters make a huge play yesterday, but also Marcelino McCrary ball like you mentioned in your article, has been balling out these past couple of practices. What have you seen from them?

Speaker 2

Yeah, we want to definitely shine some light on the younger guys. Like you mentioned, d Winners, a six round pick from this most recent draft class, got his first interception yesterday during team drills during move the ball period, I believe, and that's a big one. It's number three overall for the forty nine ers defense this training camp so far. And yeah, Marcella McQuary Ball is a guy that is just He spent last year on the practice squad and is also very much just maturing at a

really good pace. I was able to talk to our linebackers coach Johnny Holland and.

Speaker 3

He had nothing but good things to say.

Speaker 2

And Marceleno McCurry Ball almost had a pick in Thursday's practice and then again in team drills had a really nice past breakup. So again, another guy that is learning from the best in Fred Warner and Drake green Law and definitely following suit.

Speaker 1
