Gunsmoke first aired on CBS Radio in April of 1952, where it was received with enthusiasm as the first adult western on radio. the story was set in Dodge City, Kansas, in the 1870's, and was built around the main character, Matt Dillon, the Marshall, played by William Conrad. It was an instant success- and when it went to TV it enjoyed one of the longest runs on TV of any prime time shows.
